Thanks for the info. The mods have been doing their best, I'm sure, but they just can't bring this type of quality information to the table.

Seriously - do you have a career "plan B"?

dan, you started this. i simply stated my own opinion concerning calling a guy a poacher or not, you took it above and beyond. for fuck sakes, calm down. why are you getting so bent out of shape over this anyway?

Because we as hunters should be the No. 1 proponents of wildlife stewardship, and to hear a guy who says he wants to make Wildlife Biology his life's work argue for baiting wildfowl for the purpose of hunting is easily the dumbest fucking thing I've heard in quite some time.

You want to make baiting legal so you can kill more ducks - fuck whatever the last 100 years of science and research have told us about how it will affect the population.

I don't give a shit that Reb baits and kills ducks - but it's utterly mind boggling that a guy studying WB with an expressed goal of working for a State wildlife agency would have the views you do.

And I didn't start it - you're the one that jumped to the defense of a poacher by trying to justify baiting.

i'm just arguing against you dude, i never stated i am either for or against baiting. you took my statement and ran with it, so i played devil's advocate. sorry you got bent out of shape.

once again, i simply don't think it's that big of a deal to get worked up over. my opinion is that if he did it, it was really poor judgement on his part, and that he broke the law. in the end, he put grain on the ground and shot some ducks that flew down to eat it. i consider that far different than a guy who shoots banded birds in a park with a pellet gun. i think everyone jumping up and calling him a poacher is a bit harsh, nobody knows what really went on yet. when the actual events are revealed, then you can call him a poacher, but i'll still think it's harsh.

personally, i think baiting is stupid, and i've never done it.

do i think some wildlife laws are really stupid-yes. even if i was hired at a state agency i wouldn't necessarily agree with everything they did. i think some laws are very archaic and don't really apply today, that's just my opinion. Montana has a law that says something along the lines of you can't have any electronic aid that enables you to coordinate in the field. the way the law is written, you could get a ticket for possession of a cell phone if they really wanted to get you. laws like that need to be repealed or rewritten with better context in my opinion.

sorry to piss you off dude, no hard feelings?

Weak.

I don't believe for one second that you were arguing on principle or to play the devils advocate.

Nevertheless, it's fine.

And for the record a "citation" (and I don't give a damn if it's for jaywalking, baiting or speeding) isn't an "innocent til proven guilty" scenario.
It's a "You got caught doing _____, here's your fine".

In this case, he was cited for hunting over bait. What's the term we use for killing animals illegally....let's see what Wiki calls it.

Violations of hunting laws and regulations concerning wildlife management, local or international wildlife conservation schemes constitute wildlife crimes that are typically punishable.[12][13] The following violations and offenses are considered acts of poaching:

Hunting, killing or collecting wildlife that is listed as endangered by IUCN and protected by law such as the Endangered Species Act, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 and international treaties such as CITES.[12]
Fishing and hunting without a license.[13][14]
Capturing wildlife outside of legal hours and outside the hunting season;[12][13] usually the breeding season is declared as the closed season during which wildlife is protected by law.
Prohibited use of machine guns, poison, explosives, snare traps, nets and pitfall traps.[12]

(Pay special attention to this part)

Prohibited use of baiting with food, decoys or recorded calls in order to increase chances for shooting wildlife.[12]

Hunting from a moving vehicle or aircraft.[12]
Canned hunting is a particularly inhumane type of poaching wildlife as it often involves illegal activities such as trapping, caging or drugging animals, or cutting their feet with razor blades.[12]
Shining deer with a spotlight at night to impair its natural defenses and thus facilitate an easy kill is considered animal abuse.[15] This hunting method is illegal in Virginia, Connecticut and Tennessee.[12]
Taking wildlife on land that is restricted, owned by or licensed to somebody else.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poaching

Reading your posts, it seems to me that you are totally behind all for the laws pertaining to fish and wildlife as they currently stand. Consider if you will that Federal and State wildlife officials use such things as nets, spotlights and bait to do management surveys just to save time and money. Quite often laws are based on flawed results because short cuts were taken to obtain the results. In other cases, people with the lowest ability, the lowest grades in school and the lowest ambition work for the state and in some cases, wildlife surveys are used to justify pre conceived ideas.

Shooting birds over bait might be ok if limits are observed, might not be ok if bait is used for a commercial venture. Who the fuck knows?

Queen Anne’s County ─ Acting on a citizen complaint Thursday, an officer went to a field in Queenstown just off U.S. 50 at about 10 a.m. and found a hunting party. Sean Mann, 51, of Trappe, received a citation Thursday for hunting over bait. The officer seized two Canada geese.

The case is scheduled for January 8 in Queen Anne’s District Court. The maximum fine is $500.

Talbot County ─ On Sunday, a landowner in Cordova called 911 after hearing a gunshot at 1:30 a.m. in front of his house. The landowner ran outside and confronted three men searching outside a pick-up truck. The driver got back inside and drove off, leaving his companions.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived and retrieved a Remington .306 rifle from a ditch and confiscated a flashlight. The driver returned and admitted to the deputies and an NRP officer that they had been trying to “poach deer.”

Charged with shooting on, from or across a roadway, and hunting with the aid light (jacklighting) were: Ole Castro, 56, and Pantaleon Ramirez Castro, 41, both of Queen Anne; and Gilberto Castro, 43, of Woodbridge, Va.

The cases are scheduled to be heard in Talbot District Court on January 17. The maximum fine for shooting from the roadway is $1,500. The maximum penalty for jacklighting is a $2,000 fine, 6 months in jail and the possibility of hunting license revocation for two to five years.

Two seperate incidents.

I find it funny, and when I say funny, I mean ridiculous, that the whole "baiting ducks concentrate them and can cause problems" BULLCRAP excuse gets used by those that are supposed to be "in the know"....or have "studied" wildlife and are supposed to be "experts" They have used this BULLCRAP excuse for years and really its their go to excuse, cause nothing else makes any sense. Either you want me to kill 6 birds...or you don't...which is it? If I stop at 6 ducks, what do you care?

"Well....sir...what YOU don't understand, is that we in the federal govment is SO smart, that WE know that concentrating birds causes disease!" And what am I supposed to say to that? I certainly have done no study MYSELF and I, like the rest of you, just shut up and say, "well, ok...we don't want that".

BUT!!!!!!!!!! If this were really a major concern..IF this was SO HORRIBLE (the concentrating of birds)....if this dastardly deed is so vile and evil we friggin INCARCERATE people for it...then why....WHY....is it perfectly ok for (and Im not picking on TN, just happens to be where I saw this with my OWN EYES for the last 8 years straight) can the SAME federal govment create refuges where they

1. plant corn on a slow slop to a levee system
2. BUSH HOG that corn at the deepest end next to the levee about 100 yards wide
3. PUMP water out of the ground that flows into that impoundment till it floods 8" deep over the BUSH HOGGED corn (not harvested, just BLAP.....bush hogged)
4. once the LITERALLY TENS OF THOUSANDS of mallards have exhausted that food, they go in there and on the dry ground that isn't flooded yet, bush hog another 100 yards
5. .....then raise the water level to cover that.
6. Continue this process up hill all season

Now, Im not ASKING any of you IF this happens. Im not tellin you some DU rumor I heard on the internet, IM TELLING you what the feds DO in the state of TN...and has BEEN DOING for years in about 7 refuges just around Reelfoot Lake

The sight of that many ducks in one small corn field (maybe 75 acres TOTAL, including the standing corn yet to be bush hogged) is such an unbelievable spectacle that they BUILT A FRIGGIN OBSERVATION TOWER for people to go sit and watch the show.

So....this is "natural"? This is not "concentrating ducks"? This doesn't "alter the traditional methods that make migration successful"?

BULL........................CRAP!

We (the feds) know what is best.......you (the common masses) are stupid...don't ask questions....and we will put you in jail for even coming CLOSE to defying us.

Baiting is a BS law, but as long as it is LAW, I will not be doing it. But I have yet to have someone explain this one to me where it makes sense.

Hating on the feds is what WFF'ers do for just reasons at times. For unjust reasons at other times too. Most refuges have viewing towers. Most refuges are overrun with some sort of foul weed that has no wildlife value as well and was introduced through human activity. offsetting that with the technique kman describes sounds pretty cheap and a low jab ecologically speaking, but there could be a large contingent of bird watchers who pushed for such a thing. This idea of species gathering in one place and making it easier for disease to spread is common sense. common sense wont make sense to all, especially if blinded by an agenda. Little old ladies who spend hundreds on seed a year for thier feeders and never clean them or maintain the area are also guilty of increasing the potential for disease transmission about their beloved canaries. These little old ladies bark loud when they want a tower to observe waterfowl too. fats and sugars stimulate the brain in ways our bodies and our actions upon wildlife have not caught up with naturally. The ready available and cheapness of this causes malnutrition when abused. believe it or not kman, a bowl full of snails, smartweed seed, coot poop, and acorns is much better for a mallard than a huge bowl of corn over time.
