He was too ashamed to look at the camera and it was debated in the blind whether he should be put down to prevent spreading. I considered it a milestone.

I'll put this here where it belongs. I'm not picky, and will shoot whatever is flying that day.

On this particular day we shot a dozen of 'em.

Why does is seem that their heads come off easier than other ducks? You'd think with that big ol thing out front, their necks would be stronger

What kind of beetles does he use to do that? That's pretty cool.

We have a buddy who is a taxidermist, who does a lot of European mounts, I believe they are called dermistid beetles. He has a pretty good colony going and if he doesn't have work for them he's got to buy meat for them. I guess he put that spoony head in there because he ran out of customer work, my nephew wouldn't shut up about it so he gave it to him.

I immediately started to research the beetles. Seems like a cool way to make a little side money.

Euro mounts can be 100-200 bucks and up depending on skull bleaching and plaque mount.

AJ do you use the beetles? How hard is it to keep a colony going?

I'm thinking about it after I move it'd be a cool side hobby. Little macomb but still cool.

Find yourself an old broken down chest freezer, cut part of the door away and replace with screen. Put a heat lamp and some cotton batting in there for them to use as bedding. Keep them fed and your colony will grow and replenish itself. Once the word starts getting around that you have them people will bring you skulls. Make sure to remove the brains and eyeballs before putting it in for the beetles, when they eat the brains they stink even worse.

There was a guy on the refuge that had a chess set made of the duck skulls of diffrent species and hand painted their bills the original color and clear coated the clean and whitened skull. It was pretty cool.

AJ, how long does it take you to boil then blow junk off/out of the skull with the air compressor then repeat to get one clean? Them beetles save a lot of labor.
