So it's the iridescent shine on there heads your talking about. Using that logic one could say a pintail is a purple head and not a chocolate head.

Their heads are actually all dark green if you take the feathers off and look at them. I haven't killed enough pintails to see any purple shine, but you would know more than me. Seems you guys get more pintails than I get ducks all year!

I've killed a few in my day. If you examen one on a overcast or foggy day the head appears black. In good sun light the feathers are iridescent and reflect green. So to me no one is wrong or wright.

Assa wouldn't know this but a bull sprigs head appears to be brown in low light but in good sunlight the iridescent feathers appear purple.

Every Pintail I've gotten has came in looking like a rag doll. Seems they always land in the mud or muck. Never had a nice sprig on any of them either.

Pintail have always been my favorite duck. Product of my environment I suppose. I wish I could get some of you guys out west on a good north wind day. It's something you have to see to believe. I've had groups of 70 sprig land in my decoys more then once.

Dude...go back and read any of the old books and stories about duck hunting - they've been called blackheads forever, especially on the east coast.

Where I hunt, there are no Scoter. Drive 45 minutes and hunt the same river...they are everywhere. I dont get it, but its fact.

A lot of the older guys call them ring bills. Probably more fitting over the faint rusty ring around their neck.

Ok. Why do they call canvasbacks canvasbacks? They don't have a back like canvas. Maybe they should call them redeyes.

Not all cans have red eyes. In time, when they let you out of the house more, and you experience things unrelated to home schooling, you will likely see a canvasback with yellow or gold eyes.

I almost always call them ringbills. It is what I was taught and I've been around longer than most of you youngsters.
