New word of the day is "tetrachromatic".
This is actually interesting to a waterfowler.
Ducks are tetrachromatic. They have a 4th set of cones in their eyes. Tetra ....four.
It means they can detect subtle variations in color far far better than us trichromatic hunters.
They can see 100 times better.
The way genetics works . . There are lots of tetrachromatic women and they drive us crazy with the style choice crap that we don't even see.
Sigh....women.

Ducks are on the way to neark? That's possible I hear they got water coming in.
Still it will be rough breaking ice in dingle digits I refuse to even try. Maybe Monday but but Tuesday or Wednesday I'll be there. They've been downgrading the severity of the big cold blast we'll just have to see.

That’s just wonderful. Now I’ll have to order a sitka hat or something the ducks can’t see.

This works and ...dayum this hat is nice.
Banded.
I blacked up the logo. Was white.

You'd never believe how warm it is. Space-age alien technology or something. It's thin and if you feel it you go " no way this is warm". Put it on and " hey...it is warm".

Fold the ear flaps down and it's even better!

Now add this accessory and you're very warm.

Someone online gave me that fleece thing.
Thank you again.

The hat was $30 at the shop in Blytheville.
Worth it.

Hesitate to ask but I'd assume some of you travel and use motels. I usually don't but since 5 of the 8 days I'm there will be windy or raining I'll use the super 8.
How to get that 48$ rate tho.
I've just showed up and it's closer to $70 with tax and fees or whatever voo doo bullshit they do.
If there's a secret handshake or some trick I need to know speak up or I'll call you a bunch of paloookas.

Around 7 a flock of 10 or 12 went to the hot water.
At 7 15 six teal whizzed over up too high. At 730 4 mallards flew over.
Not responsive no shots fired no other fools hunting ducks.
The chips come from Meijers if you look close at label it's their generic brand.

Two hours ago it was 32.
It's 10 now and in four hours it will be around zero.
I tossed out some scratch grain for the squirrels.
That one looks fat as hell.

I keep my bird feeders full most of the time... In weather like this I supplement with some scratch grain on the ground, and the songbirds just tear it up...

It’s 60 degrees here in Jarreau, they claim it’s going to be 19 degrees with 40 mph gusts at 7am tomorrow. Sounds terrible.

I can’t fathom your weather in Champaign now. It’s a balmy 21 degrees with 16 mph north wind as I type in Jarreau, and that’s way more than I prefer. Come on sunlight please!

There are a couple terds from Canadia that can easily top any claim I have to coldness.

It's a dry cold...
I think it snowed 2 inches maybe but I've got a foot deep drift or two started.
If I were you I'd take this week off and hunt ducks.
They're going to "bounce" back north after it warms up again.

He don't know what that is.
No pizza either. We spoiled Milo that way it's a big mistake you just have to live thru it to get why you don't spoil a retriever with people food. One day an entire pork tenderloin disappears.

He gets a dog cookie.

Funny story: my 2nd retriever was a mutt we named Buddy Lee.
One Thanksgiving he got super excited as we sat down with the turkey. He lept up onto the table with cat like precision. Didn't spill a thing. He stood there with this "wtf did I just do?!?" look then hopped to the floor without disturbing a thing. Never seen anything like it we all burst out laughing.

When it's cold as hell start the truck and let it run 15 minutes before you try moving it.

At some point today I'll brine our turkey.
15#.
$8.26
Damn. A baby turkey chick is like 5 or 6 bucks.
Why would you even consider raising them to eat?
After raising the Cornish Cross chick's and eating a few I'd think about it but not much.

I could see doing ducks for the eggs.

Muscovy duck eggs are big and delicious, and Muscovy ducks don’t make noise to bother neighbors.

The songbirds are starving, just put out seeds and the cardinals, chickadees, and juncos were trying to land on the cup. Cold times.

No vinyl siding?
Does it take 5 or 10 gallons of propane to heat your place a day? I know a southern guy with a VERY BIG HOUSE that tried complaining to me about heating costs.
