Still don't mean you shouldn't be able to figure it out.

I suppose you know how to work a Biltmore Stick. If you can cut down a tree with a chain saw, surely you can operate a Biltmore Stick.

Anyone can look it up but people who cut down trees shouldn't need to look up "Biltmore Stick". Do you even know what it is used for? If someone gave you one, could you figure it out?

I don't have the slightest clue what it is. So i can't answer that.

I guess you'll have to look it up, being the outdoorsman you are and the chain saw guru, I am surprised.

Which silviculture method do you use when cutting down trees?

These are people that apply to work in a boat shop. The last two guys we had went through the military and couldn't cut up a tree. Even after being shown several times.
ooooh now I get it. Boat shop employees and military folks should know how to "run" a saw. What the hell was I thinking[/quote]

Was quite the train of thought that lead from an observation to me being an expert lumberjack that thinks everyone is a pussy because they can't cut a tree.

Yep. I spent a spring/summer thinning for Longview fibre company and still wouldn't call myself an expert with a saw in OR. For fear of the bitchplaining of all 23 "loggers" within earshot at any given moment.

Did you know, Longview fibre is no more? They sold all their land holding to Weyco (WeyerhaeuserCorp) and all the mills to some other outfit.
So, you ran the line on PCT operation? You guys used chainsaws? Mostly I've seen them using a saw similar to a weedwacker with a beaver blade on it, commercial grade obviously. You don't have to bend down to make the cut that way. A friend of mine did that for a living for awhile, until he realized it wasn't the best business model for making his first million$.

Yes sir. I had heard such. This was between my junior and senior years of high school. I was not on the trail they had tracts all around silver falls state park just outside my hometown.

I know the tools you're talking about too a Stihl weed whacked with handlebars and a horizontal circular saw blade at the base. We did get to use actual saws. Longview land was always open to hunting when I was in OR. I heard that since Weyerhaeuser bought them that is no longer the case. I also did not know that the mills were part of the deAl.

The mill in Silverton was closed long before my time. Did this buyout effect any of the other mills in OR that you know of QH?

Naw. But that's part of it. Maybe it's regional, but up here kids spend a lot of time inside staring at a screen instead of learning how to take care of themselves.
