GREAT DEAL!

Speaking of charcoal...does anyone else notice how much more ash the new "ridge" style makes.
I think they put crushed rock in there too. Some kind of "keeps it hot" gimmick of an idea.

I been using strickly hardwood lump charcoal like this. Can see it's made out of pieces of wood. Some bigger and some smaller but it's not pressed together like all the other brands. Smells good when it's cooking too.

Pretty simple, really, the concept at least. But the biggest I've done it in is a tin 5 gallon pail. Bear that in mind for later.

Usually, I make small pieces for black powder, in an old paint can. I use sticks of willow about the size of my thumb, and as long as will fit in the paint can standing up. Put the lid on and hammer it tight. I have 3 quarter inch holes drilled in the top right around the center. This is the part where it would get sketchy with something bigger, I think. When I made it in the 5 gallon tin, I drilled 4 half-inch holes in the center of the lid, and loaded it with pieces of hickory a little smaller than my wrist. Stand them up, also. I crimped the metal lid back on. Then you put the can on another fire (I used my turkey cooker) In about 10 minutes in the paint can, and 20 minutes with the tin, it'll start smoking. A couple minutes later, and it's burning good. There will be smoke and flames alternating coming out of the holes like little jets. It's burning pretty good in there. After a bit, the smoke and flame will stop for a bit, but you can still hear it "exhausting". If you held a flame over the holes, they ignite. I've been told that this is the part where all the oxygen in the can has been burned, and you're now burning/exhausting the oxygen from the wood itself (which is what you want to do). After a little more time, it'll start smoking again, this time a whitish/bluish smoke. Now you're burning carbon. Let it go for a couple more minutes, remove from heat, and flip upside down in the grass with a brick or block on top. Let it sit there for a good long while. I let mine sit overnight just to be safe. Supposedly (I don't know the truth behind this, but am not willing to risk it) if you open it and there's still a small ember in there somewhere, the oxygen deprived environment that you created will suck in air, and it could blow up in your face. So wait overnight, probably longer if you do this in a drum or something.

Always bark the wood first, and only use seasoned wood, NOT green. I'm sure you could do this on a larger scale, but be aware that you're making a pretty high pressure environment burning it without oxygen getting into it, and then cooling it with no oxygen, letting it burn up any residual, a leaving just carbon (or as close as you can get) It may be perfectly safe, but those flames coming out of the top of the paint can are like little jet engines.

I've looked into doing this as well but with a 30 gallon drum inside a 50 gallon drum. 30 hold the soon to be charcoal and you build your fire in the 50. Pulling the lid off the drum too early is just like a backdraft in a house fire. Room full of smoke with a small fire you can't see. Bust out a window and everyone inside is dead.

And honestly, the hickory charcoal as no different than what I can buy. I mostly learned to do it just do I could, and to make the charcoal for my black powder, which requires willow. Good luck finding "willow charcoal" at the store.

In a backdraft situation all windows will be blown out like a bomb went off inside, Youtube it. I don't see it happening as much in your situation more than just a big flare up but could be wrong.

Expensive powder, that requires far too many provisions to maintain and store it properly.

You can make the kind that just randomly explodes for no reason once a month, is very temperamental, and would really perform if you had a bigger barrel.

Have only made Char-cloth for starting fires. (pioneer style)

It's the same process. You don't have to be completely oxygen deprived.
When I make char-cloth the can has a hole poked in it with an ice-pick.

I nest two tin cans and put cotton inside. Throw the thing into a fire. Smoke starts coming out of the hole. You let it smoke a half-minute or so and pull it out and let it cool.

I suppose charcoal could be done the same way. Controlling the time of exposure to the heat source is something I'll have to experiment with to get it right.

Sealing a container you are putting fire to...doesn't seem very safe to me.

Will try it my way and let ya know if It explodes and roasts me alive.

It HAS to be sealed, or it will pull oxygen in from outside.
