One little trick I learned with the Sea Striker planers is that by bending the top bar slightly to one side we can get them to dive wide and away from the boat. I stamp them P + S to show us which side of the boat to pull them from. By using them this way, we can pull four at a time easily.

With all due respect wfm...when facing aft, it's left or right. Facing fore, it's port and starboard, therefore you ought to relabel your planers to cut down on confusion. For instance, you're trolling and a big blue marlin comes in on the left short rigger. You would yell, "left short" and not "port short".

The seafaring guys need to feel special with fancy words.

Willie,

Wouldn't it be easier to label your rod holders with numbers and just say -fish on rod 7-?

Probably would be but is #7 on the left side of the boat or right or middle even?

I was on a boat a couple weekends ago with 28 rod holders all used at once (if enough people are aboard). I've seen as many as 36.

If you had that many trying to call out sides and types would be a nightmare.

Yes woody, that would be a nightmare. However, if you're on a boat with outriggers, one on each side, two baits trolling from each "rigger", and one bait from the gunnel/transom on each side, it's easier to identify by side of boat and position in spread.
A picture would help to explain better.

Depends on how many you have...
If you have 9 it will be close to the right or starboard.
If you have 28 it will be closer to the left or port.

I disagree, but you are far more experienced than me.

I just don't see how it could be easier than "fish on rod number 7"
