Easy. Dont ever take the plug out of the boat.
I always seem to get a lot of water in my boat, mostly from my dog getting in and out.
My plug however is on a chain like it should be.

Same here, I pull the drain plug while the boat is still at an angle on the ramp. But there is no reason to lose it, because it never leaves the boat. My boat has a sub-floor with a boxed out section where the plug and bilge pump are, the plug gets pulled and set right there.
