I burn just about anything in my boiler. Usually semi-green cherry or hard maple burns best. Seasoned wood just burns too quick for me. AT, you have a lot to cut wood on?

Yep. If I had the time, I could go cut about 20-25 cords of already-felled timber. Just haven't made it a priority, and that's my fault.

It will still be more efficient, and the temp will be more constant.

Temp will be more constant, I'll argue the efficient though in an old farmhouse, maybe if he had a variable but I'm guessing there is no way in hell his cheap ass has a variable

Using a programmable should save over a mercury if the mercury occasionally gets forgotten to be turned down though.
