Have no idea what it's called but do know what it does. If the system is gaining energy it spins one way and if it is losing energy it spins the opposite direction.

The great "mystery" is what forces are causing the motion. It's not that complicated. Air pressure is higher on the black side of the paddles and causes the thing to spin when it's heating up and goes the opposite when cooling.

It is light. The light is the energy source.
The light hits the blackness and creates a pressure increase locally. You were right.
The black side gets hot and heats the air which increases in volume. (ideal gas law)
The white side is cooler and has no "energy". The black side 'pushes' when the system is gaining energy. When losing energy the black is giving off energy (cooling) and the pressure in-balance reverses.

It might be helpful to study the concept called an "Ideal Black Body'. It's a physics thing.

I have a feeling that the heating and cooling in the storm glass is measuring the same phenom only doing it with chemicals.

I will conduct an experiment.

The purpose of the experiment is do determine that temperature change is the mechanism that is working the storm glass.

The procedure.
I will make the storm glass cold and see how falling temps affect the device.
I will make the storm glass warm and see how rising temps affect the device.

Data: (don't have that yet)

Analysis: Can't analyse until I have data

Conclusion: Will get there eventually.

I have the same degree, but I hate Chemistry with more than a passion.
The only chem I enjoy leads to rockets launching and airplanes flying and even then I just enjoy the physical reaction parts of it.
