The man in the lower picture is Colonel William Motherway. Fought in WW1, WW2, and Korea.
Was in the Black Panther Brigade.
Started his carreer in the Navy and finished in Army.
He was also in the calvalry.

One thing that gets me about these old pics- how the hell did they stand wearing tight, buttoned up wool clothes, and raw wool underwear? Would've drove me effing nuts.

With no A/C, no bath in a week and no brushed teeth.

Somewhere I have some pics of Colonel Motherway back in the cavalry.
He was riding two bare-backed mules at a full gallop. Standing up. No saddles. That dude was a badass. When he died...the national guard had to clean out all the ordinance he had stashed in his garage. He had two howitzers in crates among other goodies.
Back when a smoke was a smoke.

True, but I think that if we didn't experience what we have now, we would all be just fine not knowing what we were missing.

I didn't have a/c growing up. In Texas. I was fine then. After you live with it, there is no going back (for me anyway).

The luxuries we experience breed weakness...

Just something to chew on. For some reason, I've thought about this topic before.

Often when looking at old pictures (too get back on topic)...

Many of us feel that if we were allowed to return to agrarian ways that our country and our culture would return to being superior to any others. For God and country is something you never hear anyone say. Its mostly me me me.

I'll look for the pics of him and his plane.
Marine squadron #214.
Solomon Islands.
Bouganville Campaign.
His CO was Greg Boyington.
I will search for the log book that shows all the kills his plane made.
That is very cool to look at.

This is one of my parent's engagement photos. They've been married for 35 years. Their anniversary is tomorrow. The frame is old and hokey as shit, but it was the original frame and it is one of my most prized possessions. It's sat on my nightstand since I was in 3rd grade and it'll sit there till the day I die.

It's weird to see them that young. Their future was so uncertain and their day to day life so chaotic. That dog is the "Daniel" in my name. Not long after this picture he stumbled into a barbwire fence and required serious surgery, which my parents didnt have the money to pay for. They had to plead for the vet to do the work pro-bono. My mom will tell the story, she's balling in the vet's office while my dad looks the vet in the eye and tells him "we don't have the money. Did you become a vet to make money or help people?"

It's weird to think of them in that capacity now. Much like how many other people picture their parents, my entire life I grew up thinking they were this invincible, infallible entity. To think of them helpless and desperate for another human being's kindness is odd.

I don't think they even know I have this picture. I'm sure they'd just laugh at themselves now if they saw it.

I know that's not "old, old" but it's the oldest picture I have access to. If I were back home I could send a pic of my family from the late 1800s, but I can't get access to it.

no pictures, but i have the records of my family going back to when we settled this country in the 1730's. we owned the lot next to Patrick Henry, who also sold us a few hundred acres. We owned 94 slaves at the time my first recorded ancestor in this country passed away, he left them to his son but also released several in his will. he and his son traveled from Virginia to Pennsylvania to Enlist in the Continental Army to fight the British tyranny. After that, the family spread out over the Virginia countryside with much of the family going to settle Kentucky and Tennessee, where most of the family still lives. We have a record of marriage of one ancestor to a "Boone" woman in Culpeper, VA. During the civil war, we primarily fought for the Confederacy, with only 2 fighting for the union. One ancestor who was a cadet at VMI got the honor of being one of the guards for Robert E. Lee's body after he died. A lot of the family were cavalry in Texas during the war. After that, we became pretty boring. I don't know if we have any records from WW1 thereon. My grandpa was in WW2, i'm told he was a corpsman. I have struggled to find any documentation on his service and never personally met him before he died. I do know that he also attended VMI though and was a fairly famous Doctor later on in life.

That is really cool, MT. We have one of those histories that some genealogist did for my grandmother back in the '50s- the first record of someone from my mother's side being in America was back in the 1690's, when he was arrested for stealing a barrel of tobacco. I like to bring that up whenever someone gets too high and mighty at a family gathering. I get my lawbreaking honest.

Have you tried contacting VMI? They can most likely point you to a site where you could search for your family who graduated- I'm almost positive they keep good records about that stuff. Might be worth a little of your time.

i think i tried their online records, but i had to pay something like 50 bucks to see it. i said fuck that, i should be able to get it for free. someday i will have to see what i can do about getting grandpa's records.

just googled my surname and apparently we have some new records! We had only had records from the first ancestor (John) in America but now we have his father's records too! looks like the father (Thomas) immigrated from Germany to Maryland (Saint Mary's county?) in 1726, then moved down into Virginia where John was born.

i also stumbled across someone here in Montana with my surname, though we have no records of him anywhere. i suspect he is in witness protection. i'm thinking about calling him

St. Mary's County is old. Not sure if it's the oldest, but it's up there. That's where most of the first settlers ended up, since it's right on the Chesapeake, with a decent harbor. I wouldn't doubt it if it says that's where they were. I can't even afford to go visit the place, now, because everything is so high-dollar.
