I got my stamp and a couple boxes of shells and waited for season opener. Opening day came and I'm all exited, got to a little pond I knew of about half hour before LST and hid in some brush on the side of the pond. No decoys, no dog, no idea what I was doing. I sat and watched ducks coming in on the other side of the pond from where I was set up. That was it. I did that 2-3 more times before I realised that for some reason the ducks liked that other side where a little stream entered the pond. Once I set up in that area I finally would get a duck. Retrieving it is another story that involves me in my underwear out for an unplanned swim.

Eerily familiar. You have my respect and thank you for sharing.

My first duck was a Wigeon. Got lucky, shot into a ball of about 50 birds doin their courtship deal. Knocked down two with one shot. Kinda sweet. Kept the better of the two drakes and my dad got it mounted for me.

My first duck hunt was a goose hunt. I stood in the corn with a brown coat on, next to my dad in a red and black checkered flannel and carhart overalls. That was a long time ago.

My first duck was a hen mallard that I water swatted the hell out of.

I was with my dad and cousin when I was 8. We were in the boat when this drake mallard comes into the decoys, both of them unloaded their guns at it, then I pulled up after they finished and took it out with one shot.

I was thinking about the first waterfowl hunt I ever went on. Come to think of it. I honestly can't remember my first duck hunt. My old man has been dragging me out to the marsh and pit blinds since I was a toddler. But, I can remember the first hunt after I passed my hunters ED. Class. My dad took me out on a Sunday afternoon to pass shoot snows In a rice field south of Delevan Wildlife Area. I haven't thought about that in forever. Dad let me borrow one of his Citori Over and Unders, and had me rip into them for an hour as birds were leaving their feeding area heading back to the closed zone on the refuge. It was probably one of the most memorable hunts me and him ever shared together. I couldn't hit my ass and he was laughing at me every time I missed and tried frantically to reload as the next wave of birds approached. I ended up with one Ross and one snow for my box and a half of shells I burned threw. Dad went three for three that afternoon. Me and him have been on countless barn burner hunts together and this one wasn't all that awesome hunt wise. Still one of my favorites.
