Did some work in Minnesota and went once with the guys. I got hungry and they called pizza hut and had it delivered to the shanty. Now that's to much time on the ice

Ice fishing is worse than duck hunting

auger - 450$
shack- gifted, but if it hadnt been, id be out 300
tip ups- over 150 easy
vexilar - another 3-400
jig rods - 100

and that stuff is only used for ice fishing, and has no other possible use, no overlap whatsoever.

By brain isn't on ice fishing at the moment, but I'm fairly effective on the pike in the wintertime.

For now, you need: an auger, tip ups, to get over the fear of driving on the ice. Your truck is warmer and way more useful than a shack when pike fishing.

You don't need: any kind of locator, jig rods, artificial lures

You can make a ice chisel out of rebar for 5 cents. Then go walk a river and find some line. That will only cost you food. Borrow a hook and don't return it, free. Your ice fishing for 5 cents and a bologna sandwich right there.

Tell us how long you stick with that.

 No shit!

I fully expect I will need an extension for the first time in my life this winter. Was always damn close in da UP but could always break through about the time the powerhead was touching the ice.

the ice isn't that thick.

MT, it's duck season. Get your mind off ice fishing for at least 4 more months.

But all you really need for ice fishing are a couple tip ups, an auger, bait, some kind of sled to haul your gear, I've even made rods with just a stick and some li.e wrapped around the tip. A shack will limit your ability to move around and find the fish. The best way I've found to attract pike to your location is by lowering a small kitten in a mason jar to the depth you are working your bait. When the pike realize they can't get the tasty kitten, they will focus on your bait. There is no need to rig up some fancy air circulation system to the jar. Just swap out the kittens every 20 minutes or so, they're pretty cheap.

What's the order code for those? (without the jar of course)

Cardinals and goldfinches work best up here, but kittens are the kings of pike baits.

I've never ordered them, sorry. Wally world usually sells six packs fr just under five bucks in the winter. Just make sure you get fresh live ones, never kiln dried.

Try breaking a wing first it works a lot better.

I will, thanks. Does it matter which wing or where I break it?

Doesn't matter too much but you can "tune" them by breaking either side in different locations.
