I'm fully aware of the laws regarding sink boxes. This is not a sink box. A sink box FLOATS. this will be sitting solid on/in the bottom in about 2' of water.

It is not illegal, it is no different than the curtain box blinds we use and have been used here since before sink boxes were outlawed.

It's plastic culvert pipe. I'm trying to figure out how much concrete it's going to take to sink it.

It will be standing on it's end, the bottom filled with concrete and will only have a few inches sticking up above the water. Similar to a small pit blind in a field but it will be in the middle of open water.

Sorry to bust your bubble but aren't sink boxes banned federally?

real world answer: start filling it with concrete and when it sinks, you'll know how much you needed. take surplus bags back to home depot or sell to Masicans.

The formula for the cubic volume of a cylinder is Pi X radius squared X length.

In this case 21 X 21 X 3.14 X 60 So, 21 x 21 = 441 x 3.14 = 1384.74 x 60 = 83084.4

Now, divide the volume in cubic inches by 1728 (number of cubic inches in a cubic foot and you get...83084.4/1728 = 48,08 CuFt.

A cubic foot of salt water is 64 lbs and a cubic foot of fresh water is 62.4 lbs. So, it will support 3077 lbs at sea and 3000 lbs inland. Keep in mind that we are using outside measurements of the cylinder and the weight of the cylinder must be subtracted from the buoyancy and depending on what material the cylinder is made of, that material will have a buoyant force either positive or negative.

The idea is to have 3.5' of space above the concrete. At about $40 0r $50 per foot for the pipe and driving 100 miles to get it, cutting it while I'm there so it will fit in the trailer, I don't want to cut it to short. Trying to get four pieces out of the 20' piece of pipe and wanted to make sure it will work and not float up.

Thanks for the help fellas.

Yeah, stop over thinking it! If you have 4 pieces of pipe and each will support 3,000 pounds, just get the pipe and 12,000-13,000 pounds of concrete, load it in the boat, pitch the pieces of pipe over the side where you want them and fill them up. What could go wrong!

Stupid plan. He needs a ton and a half of concrete to sink a pipe.
Wonder what the plan is for when he goes to hunt and its completely full of water. Bail with thermos cup?
I've heard that it's incredibly stupid to fuck around with a crazy man's head.

Did we skip over the part where sink boxes are illegal? Or is something else being built here.

if it touches bottom it's not a sink box, it's a curtain blind. I'm pretty sure anyway, he may have a problem because he's standing on the blind and not the bottom?

If I remember right and I'll look it up here in a bit. The law didn't outlaw the boxes but it outlawed you hunting from below the surface of the water. Same reason why wearing a wet suit and standing out there Navy seal style would be illegal.

Nope. As long as you're standing on the bottom, there's no law regarding the amount of your body that has to be out of the water.

We researched this heavily when designing a layout boat. I want to say if floating, 60% of the body had to be above the waterline.

As long as you're touching bottom, you're GTG.

Notice the word floating.

From a sink box or any other low floating device that conceals you beneath the surface of the water.
