Was planning on ice fishing thanksgiving morning, but I will probably be finishing up cutting elk instead. Not a bad change of plans.

Me, Dad and 2 younger brothers duck hunt thanksgiving morning on the bayou behind Dad's place. Also hunt the same bayou every Christmas morning, typically kill limits of greys and woodies.

Head or lung shot?

200 and in will do the "pink mist", over I'll break the shoulders.

It's a damn corn field. Put it through the lungs and don't waste any meat. You can watch it fall. They usually do a good face plant/ front flip at the end too...kinda fun to watch.

Or, I can drive my truck to where it was standing when it was shot, throw it in and not have to drag that bitch out of a swamp.

Been there. Done it. Have the T-shirt.

I don't do lung shots.

How big is the field? Wait till they walk 60 yards from the edge and they will die in the field.
For the record I don't have a problem with anything but a head shot. Neck, shoulder, heart. I don't care. Lung shot just wastes the least amount if meat so that's what I go for.
You'll say that until you lung shoot a deer that runs across the neighbors fence and they won't let you retrieve it.

Just blow up the shoulders and be done with it.
Don't work with a .32. They fall flat on their ass, then get back up and run away never to be found. Us, and the other 3 landowners around us all work together with deer. We've had to track a deer through their place once, and they tracked one through ours during bow season this year.

Usually about our M.O., this year I'm headed to the inlays right after eating first lunch, so no hunting in the pm, but hoping to kill something in the am. Like red said, it's usually a slow hunt, but sort of tradition.

I'm going to go out on a limb here - but from the evidence at the scene I'd say that the buck waited until a car came along and stopped to offer him help and then he kidnapped the driver and made his getaway across the border in their vehicle, and is likely living out his days in Zihuatanejo.

Either that, or someone stole your deer.

You shoulda shot him with a .32 and he would have died within 112 feet an you could have watched him tip over.

Here are the list of our clan's thanksgiving shinanigans over the last few years.

7 years ago, I shot a 9 point buck tracked it awhile, there were bubbles in the blood. So we decide to back out and let it die from the lung shot. After breakfast we head back out, track the deer another 100 yards and find a pool of blood where it had laid down and a set of tire tracks leading away, no blood or deer tracks leading away from the pool of blood. Don't know for sure what happened.

5 years ago we were hunting a beaver pond. Had 5-600 mallards trying to land in our hole. First three shots bring three ducks. 2 are recovered easily, the third requires Titz to cross the beaver damn with his dog jack to aid him in finding the duck. After the recovery was made, Titz tries to cross back over in a hurry misses the beaver damn (8 inches of snow covered it) and he breaks thru the ice... We recover Titz and head home to let him warm up.

3 years ago we sunk the flat bottom 60 yards off shore. (Y'all already know those details)

This year well, lets hope we break the curse.

I know it seems obvious, but I thought I'd throw the second scenario out as well.

Probably go out for a couple of hours on Thanksgiving morning and shoot a few ducks.

We usually trout fish Thanksgiving Day in the a.m., but this year it falls on the opening day of duck season, so I will be hunting. No midday commitments for me this year, so I am golden

Lil' Red will be partaking in a quick goose hunt, suppose to be NNW winds at 15, haven't hunted our lease in about a week, so hoping this cold weather has it loaded up!

Went to church tonight, so I'll be out in the morning before lunch. Supposed to snow all morning, so it should be a nice hunt. As long as I can still break ice to get out.

It's warm and mild today with zero wind. Couldn't ask for worse duck weather. Almost got decapitated by a pair of teal at shoot time but that's been it.
