Anybody has the right to film anyone, both audio and video, at any time they are in public. Or even if they are in their house, as long as you aren't trespassing, and they have no reasonable expectation of privacy. Which means, if some guy's rubbing one out in front of his picture window which can clearly be seen from the street, and he doesn't even try to close the curtains, the videotape is perfectly fine, and is admissible in court to refute his disability claim. Had he even closed the curtains a little bit, or even just touched them, then that implies that he expected privacy, and it would have been thrown out. But alas, he didn't.
So of course you may record pretty much any damn thing you want, anywhere, especially in public.
But that doesn't change the fact that New Yorkers are hilarious, which was the point.
Care to test your rights out on Maryland's finest?
I triple dog dare you.
Betty, even in Illinois it's legal to tape the police. The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear an appeal of a controversial Illinois law prohibiting people from recording police officers on the job.
By passing on the issue, the justices left in place a federal appeals court ruling that found that the state's anti-eavesdropping law violates free-speech rights when used against people who audiotape police officers.
A temporary injunction issued after that June ruling effectively bars Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez from prosecuting anyone under the current statute. On Monday, the American Civil Liberties Union, which brought the lawsuit against Alvarez, asked a federal judge hearing the case to make the injunction permanent, said Harvey Grossman, legal director of the ACLU of Illinois.
And everywhere else, too.The U.S. Justice Department says it is now “settled law” that anyone is allowed to record or photograph police officers in public. A statement of interest – a legal term for when an agency or organization has a stake in the outcome of a trial, but not direct involvement – filed by the Justice Department this week in the case of Mannie Garcia v. Montgomery County, Md., upholds the right of individuals to photograph police under the First, Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.
So by all means, go ahead and arrest me. But I'll win. Every time.

I told them i had legally transferred my plates, they seemed to think I was lying or were trying to force me to admit guilt. When i asked who had reported me, I answered my own question with "Because I think the reason you're here right now is because you are a friend of the neighbor, who has a history of calling the police on me."
and Red, as it turned out, several of the times the cops showed up and wrote stuff down, there was never any paperwork filed and no report. To me, that seems to indicate that the cops that were showing up were probably off duty and had some sort association to the neighbor. She was using the police to harass me and my family, and it did come up in court.

red, you always seem to take this personally. I'm not saying you're a bad cop, i don't know how you conduct yourself on the job at all. all i've said is that the one's i've personally dealt with were thugs and should not be cops. I feel like if you actually met me in person you'd be more inclined to believe that i do treat people with courtesy, and am not out looking to fight and argue with law enforcement. my experiences are just that-my experiences. whether or not you believe them means little to me, since i was there and know what happened.
Buffle, there's a pretty lengthy backstory to most of my cop encounters.

I used to feel like you do.
Whenever I had encounters with law enforcement it went bad. It was me and my attitude. I was just like you.
Then one day I messed up at a hunting club. Said I gotta go or them damned state troopers...
I was sitting with eight troopers when I said it. Doh.
Well. It turned into a focus group. Those gentlemen, one by one, instructed me in "how to not get your ass kicked by the police".
After that day my attitude changed. Even when I'm caught red handed...
The difference was amazing! Turns out its just a job and nothing personal.
Treat a officer w/respect and you will be fine EVEN IF THE GUY IS HANDCUFFING YOU.
Keep up with the "cops are thugs" attitude and you'll pay for it. I know.
We're trying to help you. Can you please take it that way?

Betty, i appreciate it. but i've said it time and time again, when i talk to cops, i do give them courtesy and speak in a civil tone. i'm less likely to give courtesy, however, when demands are being made when i have done absolutely nothing wrong. If a cop feels the need to get into someone's face and use it as an intimidation tactic, he's probably in the wrong line of work. at that point, he's most definitely a jackass.
