There might not be anything worth stealing or worth taking a ride in. Rummage around first before you start worrying about going to court. Seems like a great opportunity. Just my 2 cents.

I got a call this morning from another property management company. Their properties at the beach are infested with raccoons in the attics. The problem is, they are all vacation homes, no owners/renters present, so the property management firm wants to give me keys to all the places, because they don't have the personnel to meet me down there and let me in and out every day while I'm checking the traps.

I don't want the keys. I don't want to access anybody's place when they're not there. It's just problems waiting to happen. While my insurance covers damages and litigation, I'd just as soon not spend months in court if some jackwagon says I stole his wife's jewelry box or some shit.

Am I overreacting? Any other tradesmen ok with going into people's homes without anyone else there?

Valid concerns. I'd be sure to get a bond to also protect you. They're cheap and will provide extra protection over the insurance.

Serious fox question since we're talking about animal exterminating. I was cutting the back yard on Sunday afternoon and had a fox walk down the tree/shrub line, no more than 30 feet from me...sat there and watched me for a short while. I turned off the lawn mower, the fox walks slowly down the tree/shrub line and stops, looks at me, walks on off into the woods with no fear or worry that I was there at all.
I live in a cookie cutter subdivision, not exactly the country, but there is a swamp in the back yard.
I believe this to be abnormal fox activity and I ought to kill it if given the opportunity again.
Thoughts?

I'd kill it just on principle, but I doubt it's sick. See them acting like this all the time in Salisbury and OC. They've moved in quite nicely to urban areas, and just don't give much of a damn about people. By the time they're crazy enough from rabies or any other illness to not fear people, it's pretty obvious from their movements. They won't be as "smooth" as normal. Don't worry much about slow or time of day, look for lack of "smooth" if that makes sense.

All that being said, kill it anyway. No shortage of foxes.

I actually have seen a rabid deer before. The way it moved was kind of creepy. Like it was forcing it's movements.

Yeah, after you've seen a few critters with it, it's super easy to tell when they move. I have no scientific basis for this, but I think it's an early and reliable indicator, more so than time of day or actions, really.

On a related note, the virus dies within two hours of death this time of year, so no need to flip out, burying carcasses 60" deep or incinerating them or anything.

Postby assateague » Wed Jul 09, 2014 9:32 am

Was talking to Betty about this yesterday, and he had a genius idea. I hire a helper, at $20 an hour, whose job it is to simply go into the places. Then there's a "witness", so to speak. But I'm not going to take it- too much time involved.

Yep, genius idea! Sounds a lot like the guy I pay to go along with me hunting. He is there to tell the Game Warden that I didn't shoot over my limit, we found those ducks.
