Better than 200-300 BBs lighting your spread up?

Don't know. Not a diver hunter. I've never shot a bluebill or redhead.

Big flocks of anything will pretty much guarantee me missing :(

You have to pick ONE out Eric. Shoot that one and sometimes you get two or three in a real tight flock.

You need to repeat this 1000 times...
Eric Haynes can only shoot ONE duck at a time.

Once you get that in your head you'll start shooting doubles and triples.

Not far from me there's usually a few thousand BB's all season, I've never targeted them once, given the option of being in my layout blind in a marsh or getting the snot best out of me on the saltwater I'll chose the dry comfy layout blind. Also, I really love eating mallards, black ducks and teal.
For me calling the birds and working them into the spread is 99% of the fun. But to be fair having divers dump into upwind side of the spread right in your face is damn exciting.

Well said. Mallards make you feel like you got some swagger. If I'm lucky someone I know will invite me to hunt divers. It's something I've not done yet and the clock's ticking.
It would be nice to try and live some of the diver stories I've read. It sounds like a lot of fun too if you don't drown in a tiny little boat miles and miles from shore.

Those guys are the REAL duck hunters...there, I said it finally.

According to my sources you kill more ducks. I dunno, I'm not very good at counting.

I'm just not picky. I pretty much shoot everything. I'm not a fan of sitting in a blind with a thumb up my ass waiting for maltards to come in at 9, just because I like the view or to "get away." I love shooting until it slows down and getting the fuck out of there. I'm still young and have shit that needs to get done during the day.

Yeah. Eric, you just described what we call a "shooter". A shooter wants to arrive just in time to shoot his ducks real quick, go tag his gf, and go "shopping".
Its ok, half the guys I know are that. Young with better, more exciting, things to do.

There are several reasons to hunt. Some do it to get away from work...or their wives.
I try to find that kind of guy to hunt with. Lower expectations that are realistic.
I was young and tried doing it the quick way and its just too much stress and pressure. The idea is to go out in the woods and lose civilization a while.

You know. ..if I go out into the woods thinking "I want to just kill four and split" always leads to a clusterfuck.
Now if I go out with attitude of " will just chill out, relax, have breakfast and some coffee..."
That's when the ducks pour in on me and I'm done by 8 am.

4? I shoot 6 andd get out. Save the ducks for the next time. I've shhot plenty of doubles/triples in my time, that isn't what I was getting at. Maybe you wouldn't understand the rush of hundreds of birds dive bombing into your spread at the same time. That excitement makes me miss. Shooting mallards mallards is "busch league"

Did I do that right Jehler?

I have had goose hunts that were exactly like that. Just a hail Mary and hoping for the best turns into me shooting my limit of 8 honkers. I do try to at least shoot 3 geese though.

It must be an age thing. Of course I want to shoot ducks. But being in the blind seeing birds fly is what its about. I love the process its self. GKR and I have sat thru many a crappy harvest day and yet still had successful hunts. I would much rather look at this than anything in the city.

You need to try mallards in a field sometime. That is all I'll say about that.

Yup, so many days that started slow have turn to great hunts cause I had no agenda and just stuck around to watch the morning unfold. Maybe one of the lessons here is the morning flight might happen at 11am.

Me2 and last year met a guy who showed me where to go. Of course that's where everyone goes. Been going deep into woods where I'm alone and nobody is within a mile.

Always wondered why. My mallard purist ways is why.
Nobody even tries out there unless it's really really good. So far have found that poor hunting for the locals is excellent by my standards. If it's excellent by theirs...I want to see. So far only been there a couple times when everyone limited. Got there late this year. Maybe this year will hit it right.

I am going after teal this fall in my layout boat. We have good numbers here in wet years.
