Woulda been a nice one next year

That's a nice one today! Damn.

Yea. Would've been nice next year too...

That mindset only works if somebody on the other side of the fence thinks so too. About 4 years ago I watched a nice 6 point jump the fence and get run through by the neighbors arrow. Lol

It. Was. A. Joke.

I won't pass a legal buck. I have also never had a legal buck in bow range.

That's awesome. I've only seen a handful that big and they were all on a federal wildlife reserve. Same one the state record typical came off of.

I've never got a buck with a bow, but with a doe in the freezer and several nice 10's and a few nice 8's I will take my chances on letting the young bucks that I have seen on the camera walk. That is unless it has a bucket on its head. I have however had a few bucks in bow range

I think this is the 4th different 10 on the camera. Unfortunately all at night.

Of course, the spots probably ruined now that a coyote has gone and taken a dump on it.

Once I get one with a bow things may change but I'm hoping to jump the milestone on a little buck so I don't fuck up when a nice one finally roles in.

Once you hunt ducks, deer waiting is the most boring thing on earth.

For the record, I bow hunted exactly once in my life. Whacked a 7pt by 8:30 on opening morning 1994 and haven't been bow hunting since.

To hell with it?

I'm a too each his own kind of guy.

However, for me there is nothing like having a deer so close you are afraid to blink. You are a long way from a dead deer once you see the deer. That's when the real excitement begins and odds are very much against you. So much more thought and effort goes in to getting that deer in bow range and being able to draw and shoot without getting busted.

The other things is pure practical. Gun season in Illinois is 7 days. Deer season runs from Oct 1 to mid January. It's just too easy to kill them with a gun and the season would be way too short in a state like Illinois.

It just doesn't work good for where I hunt. The elk here are tough enough as it is trying to get them with a rifle in thick, dark timber. My uncle has been the only one to ever get an elk with a bow on the family ranch but it was too much stress.

Elk are elk. They see you before you seen them 99% of the time.

You can't just take a stroll through the woods when you are bow hunting.

My first bow deer was a little 6pt that walked under my tree, got his spine cut and was trying to crawl while I shook so badly I missed it with all five of my remaining arrows. Had to clank down out of the tree, thankfully without screwing that up and breaking my neck, with my then latest and greatest Walker climbing stand and pull an arrow out of the ground to finish the poor booger.

Thick dark timber sounds like a bowhunting paradise. Try it man. Get one into 30 yards and you'll scrap out your rifles later that day.

Hitting one where I thought I wanted to and seeing it twice after with the arrow sticking out the side of its chest but still not recovering it, made putting the bow down easy for me. Too iffy. If I'm going to shoot it, I'm going to eat it. Knock wood.

How many ducks do you suppose leave the mudhole at half throttle to go and cramp up someplace else each season? I understand its not your shooting, but if shooting and not recovering is your concern, I'd put archery well ahead of waterfowl.

There is just something that sucks a whole lot worse about losing a deer. Who knows how many ducks or geese you lose per year? A lot of those "misses" are not clean misses. How many times do you knock the hell out of a duck or especially a goose and they just keep on flying or sail off to somewhere unrecoverable?
