I'm not watching any videos, not opening any news sites, I don't even know who Zimmerman is. Sunny light breeze northern Michigan day here where nothing bad ever happens...

exactly why I don't read the newspapers or watch the news anymore. Probably irresponsible but my ignorance has been blissful

If I was Zimmerman I would get the hell out of this country. They're talking federal civil rights violation charges now. The worst of which carry a life sentence.

I get where you're coming from, and I'm cool with that. Different strokes for different folks and all. But then I imagine people 240 years ago, saying "I don't want to hear about that Stamp Act, it just gets me irritated", or "I don't listen to anything about King George and his laws, it just makes me mad". Granted, there were many, many people who just wanted to raise their families and farm their land and be left alone. Which, again, is fine. But only those who got irritated realized that, even if "left alone" for now, it would not last. I don't get irritated for my sake, I get irritated for my kids and any who come after I'm gone. I don't want them to have a life where they can't own a gun, have to give 40% of what they make to others, are prosecuted and jailed for their words and speech, and live in a society where appearances and image are more important than performance.

I'm with Jim on this one. It's true that sticking your head in the sand and ignoring all the problems around you makes for an easier life but I think every citizen as a social obligation to at least be up to date on the political atmosphere in this country.

Whenever I'm talking to someone and they say "yea I don't really follow politics so I don't know what's going on" I lose a little respect for them.

Hey Mr Troll Travon did not get off scot free. He is dead and buried.

A problem we have Olly and Jim is that our country is deeply divided in so many ways. We can't agree on anything here. I think we would do better to de power the central gubment and give more power back to the states.

There is a difference in politics and media overhype of an event that takes place every day all over this country.

While I agree with your idea overall, this is a much different day and age, with 240 years of our country's history creating road blocks. 240 years ago, there was one common enemy. We could unite around our hate of that enemy. Now, there are too many enemies to get the necessary unification to truly make things happen. 240 years ago, there wasn't white vs. black, men vs. women, immigration problems, unemployment, the awful 1%, and so on. It was us against them. End of story.

We can (and should) continue to fight to keep things the way they are (for the most part), but to have a revolution, of any kind, is not possible in my eyes. There is too much of a divide, in too many things to make things "right". I try to keep up to date on things, but I will not dive head first into a lost cause, or allow them to consume me. I too get irritated for my kids, and those that are still to come, but there is nothing that is going to break the barriers that 240 of new differences have developed, allowing things to get right again.

The problem with sticking your head in the sand is you don't see what's coming at you. They come to stick a boot, or something else, in your ass and you can't see it until it hurts.
