Everything that ive heard about him is hes a great guy. Between him and Ken grossman of sierra nevade, they led the way for a lot of breweries and craft beer.

@TK, if you're going to suggest a german beer, like Pilsner Urquell, at least suggest a german beer the Germans would drink, like Wachsteiner.

Widmer makes tasty beer, but no matter whos hefe, I can only drink them cold. When it starts warming up the banana/clove gets to be too much for my taste.

I lived in Germany for 3 years, I know what beer is supposed to taste like.
Truth be told, the Widmer Hefe Weizen would be classified just Weizen in Germany. True Hefe Weizen has yeast settling in the bottom and is cloudy as all hell.
I'd kinda like to see some Doppel Bock or Trittle Bock, just to see if I can still drink the real stuff. Even when I lived there, it was extremely hard to find a brewery that had trittle bock.
I've heard Sam Adams brewed a triple Bock for a short time but, it was probably too strong for the American market.
I never really cared for American style beer but, when I lived in Germany, I drank every day I lived there except the last month.

When a bar gets a keg of hefe in, they are supposed to store it upside down, so when they serve it they flip it back over unsettling all the yeast thats dropped out.
Theres a few places still make doppelbocks, thats about as far as they go. We make one from time to time made with cinnamon, its called Cinnabilly, pretty tasty, but for me its more of a late fall/winter beer. Sam Adams does/did make one, but it was in theyre super limited lineup. ABV in todays US craft beer market can get as extreme as they want. Everything from 3% session beers, to 16-20% Russian imperial stouts or Old ales. Kuhnhenn Brewing co in Warren MI is notorious for making big beers. Ive gotten tuned up with them at many of festivals, crazy bastards.

Roll in flour/cajun seasoning/pepper/red pepper and fry to a golden brown. Serve with potatoes au gratin and a tall glass of unsweetened ice tea
