I worked with and old guy when I was in high school. I showed up 5 min late, he didn't speak to me all day. I didn't get anything done and got yelled at by the boss. Next day i was on time I asked the old guy, why he didn't speak to me. He said "Son I would rather work with serial killers and child molesters than someone who is late". His rule was if you were late he didn't speak to you.

Well then, you shouldn't have spoken to him for a day. And when he asked you why, told him "Jackass, because anybody that would tolerate, much less want to work with, serial killers and child molesters, is a dumb fuck." And then you should have punched him in the mouth.

To be clear, I'm not talking 20 or 30 minutes late, I'm talking 5. No reason to chronically be that late, but if the whole process breaks down if someone is 5 minutes late, then either that guy needs to be paid an awful lot more, if he's so mission critical, or management needs to manage better.

These days companies have very rigid policies and them damned time card scanners. Worked for a company had it arranged to where you were penalized for being late AND if you were early too. The entire staff would line up by the clock, cards in hand, and when it hit 4 pm or whatever...you had to swipe your card...OR LOSE MONEY.
Its American, not Mexico. Ok at?

Also, I have noticed throughout my working history that those who worry about someone walking in 5 minutes late rarely notice when that same person is working 10 minutes late. I've always said that if you're going to be a stickler for me being here right on the dot, then don't bitch when everything I have going literally gets dropped right at 5:00 pm and I walk out the door.

5 mins late here and there is not a problem, shit happens. Being consistently 20 mins late is a problem. You've done this job before assa. You get to work grab what you need for your job in setting up the course and get out the door so you can stay out in front of the ass crack of dawn golfers. Most mornings here are an 18 hole shotgun start. We do a lot of rounds of golf here. We also have a 6 man crew. That's one guy cutting cups, and 5 walk mowers. I plan out the next morning the day before, after talking to the Proshop to find out when and where and how many golfers will be starting the next morning. When somebody shows up late it throws a wrench in those plans. How can I expect my entire crew to show up on time if I let "mr wonderful" slide ?

I should have qualified my statement, that it does depend on the job. And I agree 100% with you. Like you said, been there. When you've got 3 guys mowing greens, 3 guys mowing tees, and 1 guy mowing fairways, nobody can be late, because you're running as it is to stay ahead of the starts. We never had shotgun starts, at least not on a regular basis. The occasional tournament, sure, but all our starts were at 1 or 9, or on the executive course, so it wasn't as bad. But in that situation, you're right, you better be on time, or the clubhouse is gonna get a shitpot of complaints.

Although I will say that when a tournament was scheduled on a Friday (the course was just outside DC, so the tournaments were usually foreign embassies or diplomats, shit like that- very self-important people) and someone bitched about workers noise "interfering with their game", I always volunteered to cut the cups the next time that particular group was coming through for a tournament. Were they regulation? Maybe, by the skin of your teeth, but you've never seen some cup placements resemble a mini-golf course as much as on those days. Put that shit right in the middle of a slope, tuck it 12 feet and 1 inch back in a corner, uphill, behind a trap, shit like that. Really gave them something to bitch about, and I chuckled listening to them coming in bitching about 4-putting half the course.

I do that all the time, except for in a slope. The GM will make us move those. We had a Super Bowl Sunday tournament last month where the cup placement was "superintendents revenge" my boss conceded the pin sheet to me. I'm sure I ruined that tournament for some people.

So get the fucking chip off your shoulder and quit wearing you feelings on your sleeve and humor the guy. Yessir boss, sorry boss, neveragain boss and so on and so forth...Knowing that in a few years you will be putting in lots of overtime and stacking earnings for your retirement. Meanwhile unless you really need the money, work over enough that you can take comp time during duck season or when your kids need you.

Don't let them feed you liver, steak and potatoes are available at the public trough, it's just a matter of perspective and attitude. Oh, and thanks for making California's highways and byways a safe place to travel.

Truth is I should probably get over it. He only nitpicks me on one thing...on occasion. It's almost as if he's saying "you're senior around here and know what you're doing, but watch this, I'm still in charge."

But I'm fucking senior enough to know that

So get the fucking chip off your shoulder and quit wearing you feelings on your sleeve and humor the guy. Yessir boss, sorry boss, neveragain boss and so on and so forth...Knowing that in a few years you will be putting in lots of overtime and stacking earnings for your retirement. Meanwhile unless you really need the money, work over enough that you can take comp time during duck season or when your kids need you.

Don't let them feed you liver, steak and potatoes are available at the public trough, it's just a matter of perspective and attitude. Oh, and thanks for making California's highways and byways a safe place to travel.
its tough be nitpicked by a dude who has zero integrity. I'll swallow my pride for a lot of reasons, but calling him Sir won't be one of em

We don't say sir in my office anyhow. Everything is first name

Saying "Sir" wasn't my point.
not in the mood to humor him either

Are you just sore because he got the promotion over you?[/quote]Ha!
