I think this is where something clever about tapatalk should go.

This. I've handled a gun or two at stores in Illinois. You just have to tell them, "I live in a free state" and they leave you alone.

I said that, showed my SC id and military id, couldn't do it.

The clerk was wrong, next time ask for the manager.
this^ go back to that store today ask again and when he hands it to you drop it, say oops, and walk out

Not sure I'd consider hunting them without a sidearm...

I don't know about your state laws but, here in Oregon, you don't have to have a concealed carry permit to strap iron on your hip in full view.
I never carry a side arm. I'd say the most dangerous thing in the woods is other people, not animals.
for bear, you don't need it. For deer in bear country, you need it.

Years ago, Oregon didn't allow you to have a firearm of any kind while bowhunting. Then, someone with enough money for the lawyers, fought the constitutionality of dictating someone couldn't have a gun on their person by order of a state agency. The ODFW lost that battle and now you can carry guns while bowhunting but, you're not allowed to use it to dispatch your bow hunted game. If you come upm on your arrow shot game, you have to shoot it with another arrow.
I don't understand why your state would require you to have a CCP to carry open on your hip during any hunt really.

The law states you cannot have a firearm on your persons while bow hunting white tailed deer unless you have a concealed handgun and a permit to carry. You are allowed when bear hunting tho.

Why is it that way I have no idea, but it is.

I won't even go through how many state laws I would break to carry a .22 pistol in my pocket working my trap line.

Seriously, you can't carry a .22 pistol while running traps? That sucks, I feel for you. I just thought you carried the rebar b/c you were cheap. :)

Nope, can't do it legally. I probably will, but for now I just carry the rifle. The rebar is for the foxes, since you don't want them to bleed on their hides, and they beat to death very easily. But coons and possums need shooting. And skunks. And it is a colossal pain in the ass to carry the rebar, rifle, and bag, and then get a couple critters to boot, and have to carry all that stuff back to the Jeep. I can't drive my lines very well- usually have to walk a few hundred yards through fields/woods at each location. It would make my life so much easier to just have a pistol in my pocket. On private land I would probably be fine, but about half of my traps are on public land, and I'd just as soon not have to deal with that aggravation, since most of the GW around here aren't even aware that you're allowed to trap on some public land with a written letter from the state forest manager. Talk about a pain in the ass.
