I love this story. I have made a life time carrer of my willingness to escalate up the ladder on shit just like this. Its called PRINCIPAL, and if you have that and a pair of nuts, you can go a long way in life.

I would be lying if I said I wasn't terrified. I was going to go through with it, but I wasn't very excited about the prospect of actually HAVING to sit for a court martial.

Thank you.

I think you KNOW I have some principal going on. Dont underestimate the fear of unknown regarding kids.

I have ZERO experience.

My folks embarrased me a lot of times at school. I was a pretty well adapted kid at school, and hated my folks sticking their nose in.

That's where I am coming from.

Don't give me too much credit. He knew it was BS, too, but was "going along with the Army". The pisser of it is that I was a very good soldier, but I spent a lot of time with 1st Group, and they do things a little differently. They treat everybody like adults, and expect you to know your job better than anyone else. As long as you meet (or are trying to meet) that standard, they don't give a shit about the petty day to day BS. Whenever I spent a long period of time with them, I always had "problems" adjusting when I got back to my unit in the "regular" Army. This whole incident was nothing more than petty day to day BS. Ironically enough, I had just won NCO of the quarter for the 2nd Infantry Division the month before, and now I was being brought up on charges for some fresh out of college 2nd LT who had his feelings hurt.

And on an unrelated note, probably the best (and worst) thing that the Army taught me was to properly steal things, only we called it "scrounging". Not personal stuff, just stuff you need for the mission which for whatever reason the Army couldn't see fit to get to you on time. If it wasn't bolted down, we'd take it. And if it was, we'd go scrounge a wrench, and take it anyway. My soldiers always had more than enough to do what needed to be done  To this day, my wife just shakes her head whenever I pick something up and walk away with it as if I own it. (Not sure where that random thought came from.)

funny how you can end up with all kinds of cool bolts, fasteners, hand tools, attachments and shit that people leave laying around at work

i have a rule in my truck: You left it, I kept it. Tell all my friends and coworkers when i first let them ride in my truck. after about the third time i start acquiring cool shit like binoculars, backpacking stoves, ammo, free cigs, thermoses and coffee cups. if they call and ask if they left whatever in my truck i just say no.
