Strange day

Postby obxbufflehead » Sat Nov 17, 2012 9:19 pm

Well today was the first diver hunt of the year for my group. Made the 9 mile run down the sound early this morning fine(my first time running down the sound in the dark) without any problems. Got down there and got everything out and in the blind. Got in the blind a few minutes after LST and had 2 buffleheads right off the bat. I didn't get one of those 2. The guy we put in the blind first didn't load my gun  Got those 2 in the blind and it kinda slowed down for a little while. Had some pintails give us a look but didn't want to come play. Shot 1 more bufflehead and everyone in the blind had a duck.

We start to get a little hungry so we break out the grill and cook some eggs and deer sausage. While we were cooking we got blindsided by some blackheads and didn't get a shot off at them. This is where it starts getting creepy. So after a little while we want some lemonades out of the boat(which is about 200yrds away. Soy friend goes and walks to the boat and he saw a big rope that was floating there that wasn't there earlier. When he gets back to the blind all our decoys that are in front of the blind are all in a line and they keep getting closer. Before I go on I should tell this. The state has dredge pipes out on a sandbar about 200yrds in front of the blind for dredging the inlet for a new bridge. Well what happen was the dredge pipe anchor line had broken and it was drifting towards our blind with the tide. So we start getting our decoys from around the pipe that were getting tangled and throwing them behind the blind. So we are doing that and the next thing I hear is "big ducks! Big ducks! Shoot them!" So I turn around and all I see is 2 jet black ducks hauling ass towards use with orange on their bill so I say "their scoters! Shoot them!" So my friends dad was the only one in the blind so he grabs his gun and kills one and hits the other one but it kept flying. So I go and pick it up and it's a freaking drake black scoter. Well about that time the pipe moves 3ft when we weren't expecting it and it about took my friends legs out from under him. So I run and go get the boat and start throwing decoys in there and getting guns out of the blind and putting them in the boat. By the time we got the boat next to the ladder on the blind we could feel the pipe hitting up against the blind and the blind was starting to lean. So we get everything and everybody in the boat and start heading out of there. So we are about 800yrds from the blind and a state boat the was helping with the dredging come running by us heading to our blind. So we watch for a little and it looked like they were trying to put something around the pipe and drag it back where it needed to be. But all in all it was a fun and interesting day. Saw a new kind of duck killed and had fun with friends. Ended up with 4 buffleheads and the scoter. Not a great day but we will take what we can get his early in the season.

Damn that sounds like a crazy hunt. Wonder how bad it would've hurt if the pipe actually hit him?

Oh it hit him. Hit me too but it hit him harder than me and about rolled over his legs. Had he not moved fast enough he would have been on his ass and over his waders.

Sometimes. He got a drake shovler mounted last year because it was the first one he had ever shot. We don't kill many scoters around here, at least in the sound where we hunt, so that's why he is getting it mounted.

Scoters don't believe in home schooling.

A few years. The guys I hunt with have been hunting there for awhile and that was only the second time they had seen them there. Maybe that stay a little more north towards your blinds. I know they kill them out in the sound down in Hyde county quite a bit.

A lot of guys getting hit with pipe in this story. Is the term "pipe" used literally? Or should we read into it more?

I don't trust anyone in our group to load my gun for me. It might just be empty when they say they loaded it.

No it's a pipe. Like 1ft wide and heavy as crap, water pipe but filled with sand.

You have to worry about your gun being unloaded from right under your nose

Not usually but the guy that is always first in and last out of the blind is my friends dad and he has bad circulation in his legs and can't help set decoys because of it. So he is usually blind master as he calls it.

The strange part to me is why the hell did you have to take a 9 mile run to get to the blind?

Probably the closest ramp.

We have a spot that is 4 miles from one ramp and 11 miles from another. We'll make the 11 mile run any time weather allows because it cuts 35 miles of driving (one way) to get to the closer ramp.

Giada De Laurentiis is 9 miles away in lingerie holding a plate of prime rib and all your favorites with a couple I've cold beers, but shes leaving soon and you don't have a ride. Is that a good enough reason to run 9 miles?

You'll be dead when you get there..

This reminds me of a story.

An old bull and a young bull were out walking around the ranch one day.
They crested a hill and in the valley below they saw a herd of cows.
The young bull gets really excited and starts to run down the hill.
The old bull bellows - "where are headed??"
The young bull yells back and says "I'm gonna run down there and fuck one of those cows...you coming??"
The old bull hollers back "naw, you go on ahead. I'm gonna walk down the hill and fuck em all"

Soooo... does this story mean Giada has a dozen of her trampy friends with her?
