Hey fellas I need a favor. Please let me know if anyone has a female american water spaniel for sale. Either a finished dog or a puppie in the ny region. Also, please share your experience with this breed. Thank you.

I'm in Michigan and I don't know of anyone right now the last dogs we got came from Wisconsin. We've had them in the past. Great dogs for duck and upland hunting. On the smaller side and they don't take up a lot of room in the boat or blind. They make good house pets to. They're fine for the occasional water retrieve goose but if I was going to use the dog a lot for geese I would get something bigger.

As soon as my girlfriends athsmatic wiener dig kicks it I'll be gettin another AWS, like Jgun said, great family dogs, little small for geese but fun dogs. I think I saw an add in the DU magazine in the classifieds for them. Last time I checked though they're getting kinda pricey. Also check out Puppyfind.com and you can search for specific breeds all over north America. I think the last one I saw was something like $1400 if I remember correctly there is only a few north American breeders left.

Thanks great info, especially the pupperfinder website. Would you guys advise against getting a pair or just one? I really like the idea of getting two so they have company. Kind of expanded my search to include Boykins. Really have my heart set on AWS though. I found a breeder in ny too today searching around. Gunna give them a call tomorrow. Been doing some research on them obviosly, but especially regarding the inception of the breed in Wisconsin. I still am curious about how hardy they are with the cold. How would this breed fair sitting on a rock jetty shooting divers in 20 degrees?

I have a pair of labs right now that came out of the same litter. It was nice as they were pups because they had each other to play with and keep occupied. On the other hand now you have two dogs to train and I think if i had to do it again I'd just get one at a time. As far as cold weather goes...we had one that would bust ice and another that was a fair weather hunter. I'd recommend a neoprene vest though when hunting any dog in cold weather.

The fair weather AWS we got late in the fall, so the water was really cooled down, her whole life she would have to test the water before she swam, even in the middle of summer.

I dont mind a cautious little girl Seroiusly I would prefer a dog that tested the water for temp before just kamikazing a barrel roll into the water. I just love that. A dog that dips her toe in first. loving this breed

That attribute is definitely breed specific to the AWS.

I did a quicck search on puppy find and found a fresh litter in Indiana, ready December 6, this came off puppyfind.com

How could you not like something like that!

You aren't going to find a better breeder within 1000 miles, better than Bill and Gerda. PM Huntyeraws on DHC, he does hunt tests with them and he has a couple of their pups.
