Let me answer your question to them with another question.

Were you routinely picked on during middle school and high school?

If you answer this question with a "Yes" the stored aggression and hatred you have will elevate you to Lt. Bacon in no time.

What is it you want to do in law enforcement. That will help me answer your question better. My short answer would be I'm happy with my job. Some days I hate it other days I can't believe I get paid for this shit.

It's a decent living but you won't get rich and you have to have thick skin because everyone hates cops.

This isn't meant to be a deterrent for getting a CJ degree, because any degree is better than none. I have a Criminal Investigations BS. I am currently a contractor because in NYS, troopers are by far paid the most, and you don't need anything but 60 random credit hours to be one(30 credits for ex military) Even the forensic labd guys make significantly less, which is part of my degree. So for me, I could have just did the easiest degree, to get where I am now.

Now times are tough all over the country, so a lot of departments have had to cut back as well. But that's everyone.

As far as a degree, screw criminal justice. Ask yourself this, "if the cop thing doesn't work for me can I use this CJ degree in another field?" If the answer is no, choose anther degree. Most agencies just wanna see that you have been to school. Or have a degree. Have bettered yourself. Period. They don't care much for what kinda degree it is.

Would I do it all over again? Have I won the lottery or hooked up with a Hollywood starlet in this scenario? Yes I would do it again. I love being unsupervised on the road all day. I love not having to be handcuffed to a desk. And as corny as it sounds, there is a satisfaction you get wheb you see the relief in someone's face after you stop to help them. So yea I'd do it all again in a heartbeat

I guess a traffic cop would be what I shoot for. I would have to do lots more research before I can answer that with confidence.

My fear is job security if I were to land a job with a department. I know cuts are heavy, and done seem to be getting better.

Thanks for the write up. I am looking for a job that I can feel like I am making a difference, and figure that would be about as good as any. Plus, I get to taze people. ;)

in regards to job security, if you get on with a larger agency versus a small one with a small budget, you'll typically have more security.

State agencies, i.e. troopers, hwy patrolmen, state police, F&G, etc, are large agencies and will more than likely have that security you're looking for

If you do your job right, you'll make a difference. You won't save the world. But occasionally you'll make a difference to a person or family and that's very rewarding. Because its more personal. And you'll see it

I wasn't calling you a douche.

Police today are a touchy subject with me, before my time back in the good old days used to be you could trust every cop you met. They were men like Red, who worked a beat to help people. Respectable men. Now most police I've run into are cops for the sake of being a cop and you need 3 lawyers and a running video camera just to walk past them.

I don't wanna make it seem like I believe all police are on a power trip. That's not the case, I know there are good guys out there doing good work. However in my 26 years of living more than not my run ins with police have been less than desirable even when being a law abiding citizen. That's why I said it's a touchy subject for me, I want so hard to have tons of respect for all the police in this country, just isn't the case.

It's just like everything else in life a few ruin it for the many. I consider myself a realist and the "power" a cop has is a bunch of crap. Our Hands are tied more than anyone can imagine. Some were worried the "power" would go to my head but I don't think anyone will tell you it has. I think me and Aaron are on the same page when it comes to our philosophy on work. Some cops are dicks. Some are not. The hard part comes when you see the ugliness of human nature. The things no one should have to see and all you get from the public is crap because your a cop. I just look at it like this, the people that want to judge me based on how I earn my living will most likely never have to see the look on a mothers face after I just told her her son or daughter is dead. They will never have to see that son or daughter blown up all over a country road somewhere because they were out partying and decided to drive. Most likely no one will ever try to kill you just because your doing your job.

If I can save one normal everyday citizen from knowing what any of that is like I've done my job. Even if that citizen hates me because of what I do.
