Question for the Cali crew?

Hey, whats the best route to bypass the pass in northern Cali. I'm heading to Cali in a couple days and the reports are that the passes are shutting down at nights due to snow. I plan on driving to Ashland OR and then I was thinking I might need to head toward the coast(maybe 101?) to bypass I-5 until I get to the bay area. Can any of you guys recommend a route to the coast, that will get me around the snow filled mountains on I-5?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Nope, just miss riding the trolleys.
Actually, I'm heading to SanDiego area to spend Christmas with our daughter.

Will 96 to 299 bypass the worst of it or will that just be trading one snow route for another?

Nice, I hate San Diego but the areas jut to the east are really nice, hell of a drive!

Actually, she is near Vista, so a bit north. The whole too many people thing is why I don't care for the area.

I would take 199 but I'm supposed to meet up with a buddy of mine that moved to Ashland. They opened a Thai restaurant, so there's gonna be good food involved. After going all the way to Ashland, that would be quite a bit of back tracking or back roads which might be worse.
Of course we didn't make the trip a week ago, when it was warm and no snow.

There's a good chance you hit snow on 96. Not sure if they'll close it though. Let me make a couple phone calls

We're driving the ol' lady's Ford Exploder so I'll throw in chains and take it as it comes.
Where are you on the coast?

96 to 299 to 101? or I-5? Really either way will work, but 96 to 299 will add a lot of time to your drive. Might be better if you can to hit I-5 durring the day.
