My FIL just gave me a 5 gallon bucket of 15-40 motor oil, which is what the wife's truck takes. Then he tells me "somebody may have dumped some gear oil in it". So obviously I'm not putting it in the wife's truck. It doesn't look like it, and he's not sure they did (although why somebody would do that baffles my mind).

My question- I'm out of oil for the bar of my saw. I normally use my used motor oil, which is thick, but not as thick as bar oil. I want to use this 15-40, but am afraid it's too thin, and will run out so fast I'll be filling the bar oil 3 times for every tank of gas. What say you? Think it's thick enough?

use it 50/50 with bar oil.

You will be fine especially in the winter. You will use more but it is free right?

Since you have so much of it, why don't you just adjust the chain oiler down for that oil?
5 gallons adjusted to match your gas will probably last a couple years or more.

I would go 50 50 with bar oil and use some with a mix of gas for the brush pile

Good thinking. I usually adjust mine for winter/summer. Not sure if there is that big of an adjustment though.

See, I didn't even know I could adjust the bar oiler. Off to Google.

Well, apparently I can't adjust the oiler on my model, so it's going to run out or not. We'll see.

Hmm, my husq is adjustable too, but it's around 10 years old.

If you normally run used motor oil as bar oil this free stuff will be even better. The used oil may seem "thicker" but the new motor oil will have more viscosity - its not "used up". Run it, you should be fine.

I'm going to. We'll see how it cuts tomorrow. This hickory is a big ass tree that blew down back in the beginning of summer (I think) so will probably be hard as woodpecker lips. Broke down and bought a new chain, too, dammit.

But the chain was still less than it costs me to run my finance for 30 hours.
