So is your father a big upland guy and he's going to be upset if you give it up?

I could never give up upland, enjoy doing both too much. If it is what you want, you just have to be honest with him.

How to deal with him, because his life is grouse, quail and pheasant, and has never use any other dog but yellow lab.

I'm kinda curious where the fuck you live in Nebraska that a guy could consider upland hunting as a full time sport. I guess you can always hunt birds that aren't there and still consider it hunting. Don't get me wrong, I know that their are small pockets with decent populations at times, but if I had to hunt upland and upland only, I would be frustrated an awful lot. To answer your question, the best thing you can do is hunt upland with him when you can, and the next time you have a bang up hunt scouted out, take him with you. Nothing will convert a guy quicker than some hot cupping action!

Its ridiculous to draw a line in the sand and say give up. It's more an explanation of efficacy in regards to better gunning opportunities balanced with respect for your dad who bopped your mom, raised your ace, and dealt with the bologna of having a child in the field to have a future hunting partner. The most important thing is to explain how badly you wish to share some waterfowling with him and then the fact of expending more shells/action. This all is assuming you have hunt-able waterfowl numbers mind you.

I have asked him to go, but he does what to spend the time nor money on decoys.

I agree with 2, for an old dawg, force fetch will fix anything. If you doubt me, just log on in the dog forum on DHC and ask.

I grew up only upland hunting, in my mid teens started waterfowling, with friends and by myself. Many years later I still love upland hunting, but do more waterfowling than anything, cause it is so close to home. The 1st person I call about hunting and spend more days in the field with is my dad. Things can change over time, hope it turns out the same for you.

Do your upland hunting with him, and do your own waterfowl hunting. When he sees how much fun you are having, ask if he wants to join you for a hunt.

I would do that but hes doesnt want to put anytime or money into it, wants me to do all and then come with me.

He is your Dad, that is his choice. If he wants to hunt upland and you want him to go for waterfowl, sounds like it is on you. I could see why he would rather spend his time and money on his passion. You should do the same.

My dad is making a trip to ND with me this year to duck hunt because he understand that my passion and my brothers passion is hunting ducks. At the same time he wants to pheasant hunt up there and we are both perfectly fine with that, you need to find a happy medium.

Thats probably the way its going to have to be until you take him on a few hunts and either he likes it and continues or hates it and stops.

My dad is a die hard whitetail hunter. When I hit about 13 I got a big interest in waterfowl hunting but he was not getting into it. So I started saving money and hunted beaver ponds on our deer camp. In a few years I had all the necessary gear. Eventually I got him to go with me. He tolerates it and will go if there is nothing else to do otherwise he is out. Every time I came home with duck stuff he gave me a hard time but never got too worked up. I'd get remarks like "dont you already have decoys?" and "what do you need that for?" on everything I bought. You just gotta do it on your own if he has no interest in waterfowl.
On a side note don't give up on upland, it's a blast. I love it almost as much as waterfowl.
