What Should I Buy

Ok, I'm notoriously cheap, but don't mind spending money on something I want when I've thought about it for months (if not longer), and decided I do want it, and it's not an impulse. I decided I'm going to treat myself to something with my first fur check of the year, but can't decide. I've wanted a welder for years, and the .22 pistol for almost a year. So much easier to go out and shoot guilt free when shooting .22s instead of .40s. The neighbor and I went out yesterday blasting away at stuff, and spent about $100 worth of ammo, if not more. The same amount of shooting with a .22 would have been about $8. But then again, my Jeep door was broken for a week because I don't have a welder, and don't know how to weld. So there's my dilemma. I still have a few weeks to wait on the check, so it's not critical. Just curious what others' thoughts are.

I've owned a Ruger 22/45 with a 4.5" bbl for 10+ years, it's stupid accurate and waaaay to much fun to shoot.

You're going to shoot anyway, take the money you save on ammo and use that to buy a welder!!

I just bought another one with a threaded bbl. and bought a Gemtech Outback II and sometime in the next 12 months the ATF may let me take it home.

Take the Jeep to a welding shop for less than $30 bucks I bet they can do the little welding you need. Buy the gun.

I voted for welder. If you have a welder you can save a lot of money by fixing things yourself. Guns are always great to have and buy more of, but I would go with something you can save money with, and build things with if needed. But if you do a lot of shooting like you did yestarday, you might be able to save enough money in ammo shooting the .22 vs .40 to buy a welder after a few days of shooting.

Buckmark .22. How can you not know a single person that doesn't have a welder that with a little reciprocation you can use whenever.

Oh, I do. My neighbor fixed the hinge for me Saturday night. Only cost me a couple pounds of deer sausage, and that wasn't even asked for. Just seems like I'm always saying "I wish I knew how to weld". But I really do want that gun, a Taurus PT22. Fits great, and is fun to shoot. I decided on the arc because two of my neighbors in the "compound" have MIG welders already- we need an arc welder. Although I DID almost try this sometime around Wednesday evening.

I would buy the welder, if it were me. First take a class or get training in welding so you can be better informed of the exact welder set up you want to spend your cash on.
Here's my reasoning. If you are able to weld, you can fab all sorts of things that you can sell and you can trade favors, so to speak. Just something as simple as a metal box with hinges, for a bear box, to protect and lock game cameras, is a simple example. Guys can't find enough of these and they're a simple starter project that won't cost much to fab. You can sell them on all the hunting forums and craigslist. In a month or two, if timed right, you can easily make enough for your 22 and a pallet of rounds(if you can find them).
Start with simple things like the boxes that craftsmanship isn't as important and, as you get better at it, you'll move to higher dollar stuff guys will pay for the material first for.

QH does bring up a good point- welders (at least around here) are always, ALWAYS busy, and very high dollar. I'd imagine that there are a lot of people like me, who need a simple something fixed, and don't particularly mind what it looks like as long as it works, who would gladly pay $40 for someone to fix it, as opposed to waiting 2 weeks for someone to fix it for $200.

Knowing how to weld and owning one is always handy. To be able to fix something right away, or start a project on your time schedule is great. You dont have to wait for the shop or welder dude to make time to do the work. I would go with the welder first. Its like duct tape it can fix all types of stuff. ;)

I should also temper my advice by saying that there are 2 MIGs an Arc, Oxy/Acetylene torches(x3), a plasma cutter, a lathe, a press brake and enough steel stock at the farm to build an aircraft carrier.

I probably wont be buying a welder for "personal use" in the foreseeable future.

Lolz

I was going to say welder too. You might make a couple bucks of fur by shooting stuff, but you can make a couple hundred by welding stuff

I vote welder. Get a Lincoln or Miller. Not only now do you have a welder but also a generator. Then you can power anything and weld. Make money on the side and then buy a gun later.

When society collapses and there is no electricity the welder will be worthless.

I vote gun.

However I also wish I had a welder and wish I knew how to weld also.

No, that one is not a generator. If you get a high dollar gas powered welder they are generators also. He should know that's not what your looking at!
