hey everybody, i know this has probably happened alot but, im the experienced hunter and fisherman who has hunted about everything except waterfowl, so i regestered tot his site in likes of getting some good advice and shoot the shit with all the vets. so basically im just wondering the basics to waterfowl hunting, the only gear i have for it so far is a browning bps 12ga. long barrel, so my questions are what type of calls, camo, 12ga. shells, and times to hunt ect. thank you!!

Other things you should purchase,a dozen decoys, duck call (cheap one to start), waders, and a face mask. You'd be good to go from there, next thing you should do is scout plenty of spots before next season.

A good call for a beginner is a K. A. zoo. The ducks will be easiest to decoy in Feb and March.

Lots of good calls, I don't really have one to specifically recommend because it depends on the user. Go try some out.

you planning on hunting lake MI or inland?? Neoprene waders will be your friend up here. Any steel load in #2 or #3 will kill ducks. Buy a few boxes and pattern your gun. I use 3" kent fasteel #2 with no complaints. Not a fan of experts though. Your deer hunting camo will be fine for duck hunting. As for calls I started on a double reed zink Powerhen 2 but I later found out that it is much better to learn on a single reed. Maybe try the call forum and ask about beginner calls.

I learned to call on a cheap double reed. Just go to a store that has a bunch, and start "ooaack"ing into them until you find one that sounds like a duck to you. Same goes for decoys, a dozen mallards will get you started and they don't have to be the most expensive ones out there. Camo you can use whatever matches decent enough, just don't move and don't stare right at the ducks. Like was said, #2 or #4 shot is what is mostly used for ducks. #2 is a decent all around load and is enough to take down a goose with proper shot placement. BB you can get away with being a little slopier on geese. Ducks move mostly at dawn and dusk.

Best places to scout are DHC and the Refuge.

Grassmarine, do you know anyone that waterfowls? I'd suggest going with them for a season to learn the ropes. We could give you a ton of advice but the best is experience.

Swap the call for a jerk string until you learn to call, then use both. Calling takes time to learn and helps to learn from someone that knows.

A cheap and easy call for a noob is a drake whistle. U can be an expert in ten mins. The trick is knowing WHEN to call and when o be quiet.

put as much gas in your truck as you can and drive off a small cliff...er, I mean go looking for birds with your binoculars. Take note on times they are using areas and right that down on the back of a pack of matches and then light the matches and throw it in your gas tank...er, I mean keep the notes for your upcoming hunt and make sure you beat the birds to that spot.

I'd say get two dozen decoys and a good pair of waders. Do as much scouting as your time will allow then place a dozen decoys to the left of your blind and a dozen to the right while leaving a big hole in front of you. Thats where you want the ducks to land. If you want to get your confidence up try hunting on the Texas Coast for redheads. You can work on calling later.
