"Joe's" epic timber hunt

I took a guy named Joe duckhunting in timber. Have known Joe for several years and wanted to show him how it's done.
We went out into the timber early one morning. Have hunted with Joe a few times. He won't let ducks land and I've argued with him about this. You have to let one land. Most likely the first duck to land is a hen mallard and we're NOT going to shoot it. OK?

We set up and I had it perfect because I'd hunted the same hole for days. LST comes and nothing. We had to wait about a half-hour or so and then it was on.

I started working some ducks. Then one landed. A hen mallard. Had to whisper, "no, wait".
Then four more landed and again I had to say, "hold on a second". A few seconds later I said look up. Then I hollered, "shoot 'em" and we started blasting. There were mallard ducks lined to land up as far as we could see and more we scrambling to get in line. There were ducks everywhere.

It was like I'd spilled a 55-gallon drum of duck candy on the ground. We shot 6 ducks and then didn't wait much longer for the other two.

YOU HAVE TO LET SOME LAND!

Sounds like a good time. To bad there aren't that many ducks around here for that to happen. Open water is a little different than timber I suppose.

Exactly. If I let a duck land around here, it's only so I can water swat it.

AMEN. Had to do it with a pair of GEs this year. Prime mounting specimens and they are still in the freezer. Decided against wasting money on a mount and instead I'm using them as training ducks.

Wasn't sure about eating a duck with guts frozen in it for a month. They were fat and plumed out though...they are still there if I change my mind.

Oh crap, that reminds me I saved a common GE and a Barrows GE for a guy from DHC. Their both still in my freezer and I haven't heard from the guy in a few months. I guess I've got a couple training birds too now.
