Suggested waterfowl guides in North Dakota?

Postby beaufort » Fri Feb 15, 2013 8:42 pm

Hello, Planning a trip to ND in October or November of this year and wanted to see if anybody can suggest great guides there, preferably guides they have experience with. Flying in from North Carolina with a group of 6 to 8. Want to hunt about 5 days. None of us have hunted in ND. We're not concerned with great accomodations. Rather, we're looking for the best duck and goose hunting and a guide that's going to work hard for us. Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions.

I would be more concerned with accommodations. Hard to find a place to sleep anywhere other than the back seat of your vehicle in ND with the oil boom. I wouldn't worry about the hunting, it will be great.

On a serious note, I have nothing specific to contribute, but I'd be willing to bet that with the increased number of people with money to burn, that the number of "guides" has gone up quite a bit, too. I'd be careful to pick someone that's been in business for at least 10 years at this point.

Nothing personal. There's another website that is plagued by guys from NC trying to get people to give up spots. I know that's not what you were doing, it was just the NC reference, that's all. And I'm serious about the guides- from what I hear, every industry, including the hunting industry, is being hounded by new "start ups" who don't know what they're doing, giving everyone else a bad name. Even if it costs a little more, I'd be more comfortable going with a guide who's been around, regardless of what the new guys may be promising.

I agree with what assa said on going with an established guide service. There are a lot of birds up there, killed mostly canadas and mallards when I've gone up there. I don't use a guide service, a guy I used to work with lives there and I go with him whenever I get the chances.

Your very first post on this forum falls under what would be consider cyber-scouting, which is highly frowned upon.

That being said, take the same advice I've given every single person who has ever asked where or how to hunt in North Dakota. Take a map of North Dakota, stand back about 20 ft, and throw a dart at it. Now, find a hotel or better yet contact the chamber of commerce and see if you can find someone who offers houses to rent for hunters (should be able to find something for anywhere from $20-$50/night/hunter). Book your hunt. Use a (hopefully) reasonable knowledge of duck/goose habits, and spend the first day you are there scouting. The great thing about North Dakota is that you can hunt any land that is not posted, which there is a ton of. There is also a lot of public (PLOTS) land to hunt as well. It is very easy to be successful in North Dakota, and you don't need a guide to do it. If you don't believe me, I'd be more than happy to send you pictures of the last two years we went, with no prior knowledge of the area we would be hunting, and managed to kill about 90 birds over 4 days each year.

Ha. Damn. Walked into dark alley. Sorry fellas. I'm not looking for anybody's spot. We've never hunted in ND. I understand it's getting more difficult to do on your own. And I don't have a lot of time to drive out there with all our gear. I'm just looking for the name of a waterfowl guide that someone has used and would recommend. Thanks for the welcome and the advice.

Call me dumb but I didn't read the op as a cyber-scout, he asked for recommendations on a guide. Only similarity is too lazy/not enough time (no offense) to find his own hunting spot, hence the willingness to pay a guide for his services.

Welcome new guy, we'll grow on ya after a while.

While I agree (to an extent), that this isn't TRULY cyber scouting, it is damn close. That being said, welcome. I would still strongly recommend trying to do it yourself, for several reasons. North Dakota is one of the last (if not the last) states that allows you to openly hunt any private land that isn't posted, and it is a great system for all parties involved, as out of state hunters keep the small towns in North Dakota alive (at least, up until the oil boom they did). Guides are either doing one of two things, guiding on public land (which is BS if you ask me) or buying leases on land that would otherwise likely be open to public hunting. We don't have many guys on here from North Dakota, but I can assure you that almost all hunters in North Dakota would agree with me in saying that if you are going to hunt there, they would much sooner see you not hire a guide, as it is slowly but surely taking away good hunting land. Until you get there, you will not truly understand just how many birds there are and how many places there are to hunt. Keep this in mind, I haven't gone on a guided trip recently, but the last time I checked, prices are usually about $100-150 per gun, per day. That's A LOT of gas that you can afford to spend a little time scouting. Also keep in mind that with the exception of Wednesdays and Saturdays, you can't hunt geese in the afternoon (http://gf.nd.gov/regulations-hunting-fi ... ting-guide), so you will have plenty of time to scout for the next days hunt.
To achieve success, one must possess dedication, passion and a boatload of decoys.

I don't see how asking for a guides name is even close to cyber scouting. Lighten up.
