MATH HELP NEEDED

Postby assateague » Sat Feb 16, 2013 3:59 pm

Ok, here's the question- if I have one quart of roughly 90 proof, and a half-quart of roughly 170 proof, what is the proof when I mix them together? I hate math.

Don't do it, you'll just dilute the 170. If you want the 90 to be stouter, just drink it faster.

No, it's for an apple pie recipe, so it's all getting diluted anyway. I thought I had more uncut, but I don't, I only had about one quart uncut, the rest was already down to about 90 with spring water. So I'm trying to fiddle around with a recipe, and it's killing me.

Allegedly

I think it would allegedly dilute it down to roughly 100 proof. Thats just a guess.

Ok, good. I may have a little too much cider and cinnamon cooked, so I better experiment before dumping it all in. I would be pissed if I ended up with something less than 65 proof.

I converted to percentages and metric. The second time I calculated I also used paper and a pencil instead of memory :D

Ok, here's what I did. If there's an easier way, please let me know. Converted to mL (estimated). Then multiplied each by their percentage (not proof), added the total, then divided by the total volume. I got Joel's answer as well, and it's close enough. I'm half buzzed from sampling it to get the recipe right. Not sure it was the best idea to sample a shot at a time. 3 in the last 15 minutes has me feeling wonderful.

Real answer is 1 quart at 90 plus 1/2 quart at 170. So common denominator is 1/2 quart. So 2 - 1/2 quarts at 90 plus one 1/2 quart at 170. 90 + 90 + 170 = 350. 350 / 3 = 116.666667.
