Well, figured I'd try this here. My oldest daughter has recently "confiscated" my backpack that I've had for almost 20 years. She wanted it for school, and I caved. I use it for everything, fishing, clamming, going to the beach, travelling, you name it. It's my only piece of "luggage" I own. I've been looking around, and all the packs I see are cheap pieces of shit, but they still cost $50. So I figured I'd pony up the cash and get a decent one. I've narrowed it down to a 5.11 Rush 24 or a Sandpiper Bugout Bag. Not a huge difference in price or size, and the reviews look to be about the same. Wondered if anybody had any input on these, or other suggestions before I drop some cash.

I will be severely disappointed if Doc doesn't have some sort of input.

Haven't bought a backpack in awhile so don't know the go to MTN hardwear one to buy but this one will give you an idea.

i don't usualy recomend cheap shit from walmart but i got cheapo camo back pack from there about 8 years ago and it hasn't let me down yet

It's an Eddie Bauer that I bought in Korea, so it's probably a knock off, but the damn thing looks new still very heavy duty.

Olly, thanks for the link. I do like them- they seem to be heavy duty, and that's what I like. If you get a chance in the next few days, can you measure it and see what the dimensions are? I always wonder if what all the manufacturers put on their specs is jammed full of shit, max size, or just a measurement of the back panel and roughly how deep it is when it's "open", but not full of crap. I'd hate to order a bag based off of those numbers and get either a monstrosity or something too small to hold my clothes for a business trip.

That's what I'm gonna do, I think. As much as it pains me to spend $100 or so on a bag, I'd be even more pissed spending $50 on one that the shoulder strap rips off walking through the airport because I have it jammed full of 5 days worth of clothes.

Yea I'll do it for you tomorrow. I used it during deer season to stuff a lunch in and my jacket when I was hiking in. It's a nice bag and they aren't a high end company like 5.11 but I have no doubts the bag will last for years.

I've had a high sierra backpack for the last decade or so that I use on the back of my motorcycle among whatever else I use it for (not a weekly occurrence for heavy use by any means, but during the summer it's daily for my lunch at work). It's pretty handy but not the biggest for 5 days of clothes

what is it you really want? a daypack or a backpack, 2 totally different things. You're not gonna touch a decent pack for $100 and $50 is gonna get you a kids pack for carrying books to school that will last a month if you're lucky.
How big do you need.
I would say get something from Badlands like Tripod mentioned but, you're too damn cheap to pay for one. They have a lifetime warranty. There aren't many pack makers gonna give you that at any price.

I'm looking around 2,000 cubic inches, but the size is more important, because it has to either fit in an overhead on a plane, or fit under my seat if they're all full from those dickheads who roll half their wardrobe on there in a demi-suitcase. The one I have (had) is 19"x13"x8", and is damn near perfect. And you're right- $120 was pushing it, no way I'm coughing up $250 for a backpack.

All my buddies in Afghanistan recommend the Sandpiper, but we'll see- I like the looks of the one Olly linked, too.

I'll be honest Jim of the three I own, none are the backpacks, so I cant answer that. But I promise you, if you want another 20 year old durable sonuvabitch, this is the one.

I'll shoot them an email. They have the exact size I'm looking for, but the others I would be "settling". But if I can't take off that waist strap, it's a deal breaker. I cant stand those sonsabitches 95% of the time.

I used my UA day pack for my carry on when we went to Canada, I hooked the waist strap together and cinched it tight to the pack. Worked fine and wasn't flopping all over hanging up on shit. It was just the right size to fill my portion of the overhead, but not make me the dickhead that takes up the whole thing.

I hate those cocksuckers.

What flouted me more was the Fockers who throw their bags at the front of the plane when their seat is at the back, just because they don't want to carry it all the way to the back . Lazy sobs
