The quest for 1000

After last weekend my friends and I were sitting at 980 birds in 12 days of hunting. Well we could not stop that close to 1000 and not at least try for it. So the sole goal of this last weekend was to get 20 birds. Of course would would not stop their either. Ended up shooting 22 saturday morning in a traffic field that had been hunted with a different spread the day before. Absolutely no wind last saturday morning. Found a loaded field and got permission to hunt it. Wind started to pick up and it was SW. So we knew with that wind and sun in their faces it would get brutal. Awesome blue sky afternoon. Just the type we like.

First few flocks did not like what we had to offer and avoided us like the plague. Then it started to get interesting Flocks of 50-500 finishing 5 yards or less. Landing singles and pairs all around the spread. It was awesome. One of those days its like shooting fish in a barrel. The show the birds put on was worth every minute/hour of picking up the spread and putting it back out again in a different field mid day. We ended up killing 65 birds. Should have been 100+ easy. Gunners were definately not abundant on this trip. We were having 4-5 bird rainouts when we should have been having 10+ every flock.

Sunday morning the birds were piled back into the same field we had just hunted the afternoon before. So we decided to call it good and hunt the same field. We only ended up with 25 birds. Still had some good flocks in tight but wind shifted and messed it all up. Still horrible shooting.

Didnt get to many good photos either of birds coming in. Memory card kept filling up. The pics and video this season do not do a justice to the birds or hunts. It will be better next year.

Too much work for me to even think about cleaning all that.

I miss the snows we used to get around here, as recently as 6 years ago or so. They just stopped showing up.

Yes cleaning was quite the chore. But with the invention of the bird hitch, it makes cleaning birds a lot easier. Perhaps a no-coast spring hunt next year?

When I heard stories of people filling a dumpster with snow geese on a conservation hunt I didn't think it was a unit of measure.

I think I could talk myself into heading north for a hunt like that.
