Another Rant

Ok, I know gun laws are silly, crazy things. But now, with the background checks jammed up, to the point that a new pistol will require a wait of a month and a half, if you can even find one to buy, I looked at getting one from another state, just for grins. I was pretty sure that there were no states that would sell a pistol to a non-resident, and I was right.
Now for the rant. Why the fuck not? It is a FEDERAL background check, run through the NICS system. It is the same check, accessing the same databases, from the same places. Why the fuck can I not go to Utah and buy a gun if I want to?
Perhaps I'm wrong, though, and they're not all the same. But I'm pretty sure they're all called in to the same place.

I do. I need a .22 pistol, and apparently it's about the same thing as trying to get the Ark of the Covenant here in this fucked up state.

Assa I don't think a federal check has to be done to get a gun. I think all the states just do it through NICS. In GA if NICS can't be reached or they don't return your check within 10 days the state will sell you any gun you want.

Isn't NICS a federal program?

If you ever happen to buy a Ruger SR22 and decide you don't like it, I'm sure there would be someone willing to buy it from you. Legally, of course.

Yea but what I'm saying is, isn't it up to each state to decide how they want to sell guns? What federal law says that you need a background check for handguns and not long guns. Legit question going to look it up now.

Oh I guess it's part of getting your FFL license that you have to call in and use the NICS system.

Allegedly...There was a thread here showing a kit that makes an oil filter into a silencer.

I've already seen the light. Doesn't mean I'm gonna do anything about it, though. Other than cheat and connive to get around anything I possibly can, that is.

Handgun purchases can only be made in the state in which you reside, so technically, you can buy a gun out of state, you just have to have it shipped to a dealer in your state to fill out your 4473. Every state has different criteria for handgun purchases. Michigan, for example, used to require you to have a Concealed Pistol License or a Purchase Permit (good for one purchase), and then required that each handgun was then registered to you via the State Police. I have since moved, but I don't believe Michigan requires a permit at all anymore, simply a call to NICS and you're good. Iowa and Nebraska both require either a Concealed Carry Permit or a Purchase Permit (good for 3 years in Nebraska, 1 year in Iowa, for as many guns as you'd like while it is good). Missouri I believe just runs a NICS check (no permits required), other states have a Point of Contact at the state level that runs the background checks instead of NICS. Long story short, every state's purchase process for handguns is different, and because the process and restrictions between states are so different, it is basically impossible to sell anything but long guns to out of staters, it's the only way to ensure you aren't selling someone something they can't buy. That being said, I've got a Ruger SR22 sitting on the shelf at work, how bad do you want one Assa?

Bad, but I'm still working on a way to not have to wait until the 4th of July to pick it up.
And I get what you're saying regarding the checks, but, at least here, it's foolish. MD requires nothing if you move into the state with a pistol, only if you buy one here as a resident. So what the hell good is it doing?

I was gonna say I could have one waiting for you at the No Coast Hunt...

Keep that offer open. It may end up being that damn long before it's over with.

Will do, just say the word. Btw, not sure if you saw it earlier, posted it in the 100,00 thread, but I have .35 Rem on the shelf as well. Think I have 150 gr PSP and 200 gr SP, $29.99/box.

Yup, do any other manufacturers still offer .35 Rem besides Remington? Never took the time to look.

Hornady. But I don't trust that ballistic tip deal in a tubular magazine. Just doesn't seem like a good idea, no matter how safe they say it is. Wasn't sure what the "SP" was in your post.

SP - Soft Point
PSP - Pointed Soft Point (Not sure why they would offer this, doesn't seem like it would be a good idea in a lever gun)
http://www.basspro.com/Remington-CoreLo ... /10207433/The LeverEvolution rounds work fine in tubes, never heard of any accidental detonations, but I have heard some people not caring for the actual bullet construction on them. I guess the jackets on them have been known to separate, but anything I've heard on that was on the .30-30, not sure how they perform out of a .35.

I'm liking mine so far, even picked a pretty sweet holster for it at the gun show - 20 bucks with a mag pouch on it.
I also talked to a gun smith about threading the barrel and making me an adapter - 60 bucks for both.

I'll stick to the tried and true. I have no idea how many deer I've shot with those 200 gr, and never had to track one yet.

I bought one for my wife as a Christmas present. I am still waiting for her to have a decent weekend off to head over to TK's range to try it out. I have been tempted to take it out and shoot it, but since I bought it for her, I'll let her be the one to break it in.

I told tripod the same thing- check the set screw in the trigger guard. My neighbors backed out, and the barrel was rattling around in there like a box of rocks. Ruger sent him a new one, and said that he should put Loctite on it- they didn't do that for many of them, and have seen the problem many times. Not a huge deal, but it'll save you some aggravation if yours doesn't have any on it from the factory.
