My speed goes way down when it's bad weather. Used to think it was from having a poor connection. Every time it rains the speed goes down so noticeably that there are times I plain can't use my PC. I suspect it's because everyone gets online and goes shopping or whatever when it rains.

The past two days have been clear and sunny. PC flies. The next few days are going to be rainy.
I'm enjoying the fact my PC is working quickly.

Do you live in a large neighborhood? Is it cable, DSL, fiber?

I hate seeing all these small rural communities which have 100M symmetrical fiber for less than $50 a month, thanks to the rural broadband initiative (read "dumping my tax dollars everywhere they can). Pisses me off.

You're going to hate me then. Champaign-Urbana isn't small but has a fiber-optic network . C-U has a University, a College and a TON of gubment buildings. The network is for that but they decided to offer free hook-ups in my nasty poor neighborhood. The network was just completed last year. It's called G2 or something like that.
I get it for $20/month. The free installation
has a $3000 value. I think the system isn't the problem but the 7-yr-old Dell is.
I think maybe my ram is burnt up. I dunno. Works fast sometimes when it's nice out.

More:
The University of Illinois is and has been the best school to go to if you are handicapped. It was built to be that way. Every single building is handicap accessible. It's a very large school too. Lots of "foreigners".

Yeah. I understand part of it. What he's saying is to delete all them goofy pictures I downloaded just so I can upload them here. The defrag is already on auto and has been since day 1. Day 1 was in 2006 I think.
I have the wife talked into getting a laptop. (it was her idea)
Then we'll send the PC to get cleaned up.

Do you think pedaling faster would help?

I know, the only way to truly keep clean is how my dad does it. he's wealthy and can afford to do what I am about to suggest.

What he does is to run two identical PC's. ONE is isolated and NEVER get's hooked to the internet.
He's good. Brilliant with machines and a total idiot at people stuff. Sound familiar?

When his intenet PC gets sick he starts digging and takes out anything that is not on the 'safe' pc.
I'm sure this isn't a perfect way of maintaining a PC but is probably the best way. My dad is a PHD is EE. I think he can run circles around any of us in the "pc world". I REFUSE to let that man touch my pc because he'll sit there digging...then go AHA and rub my face in something that I wished he'd never found.

Not so sure about that. I'd say a good up-to-date antivirus is better than having two computers. But that's just me. The life of a computer is realistically no more than two years, anyway.

I have up-to-date anti-virus.
I'm pretty sure the "user" (abuser) is what's wrong with the PC.
Pretty sure the pc is infected with all sorts of good stuff.
Trojan horse etc.
Them services protect ya good. Macafee is the one we use.

They just get old. Everything now jams up the memory, no matter how hard you try to keep it clean. If you're only running 250MB, state of the art in 2003, it's going to run slower than a computer 1/3 of the price with 2GB.

Combination of that with the processor. Those little Chinese sweatshop fingers have gotten far more advanced in building the processors in the last 10 years.
