Dear Jim,

Please read this-

"Pintails using the Central Flyway winter in the Texas Panhandle and on the Gulf Coast of Texas and western Louisiana."

I have seen some pretty good shoots on tv of springs down in Texas. I would really like to go down there and wack a pile of them. Additionally, I have some contacts near Brownsville that could put us on some free hog hunting.

How about we go fix this little "deficency" in your hunting resume? I am about 5 hours from the panhandle...

All I ask is no drinking around guns. I would be honored to film you killing your first sprig, and you can bet your ass it would make the front page of my blog.

Its an idea.

Hey JIM! How bout you head on over to the west coast and hunt the largest wintering population of pintail on earth. I don't know about the hog hunting. But I can promise I can get Boot to show you his Belly Button after a few Chardonnay's.

So, 5 hours from the panhandle is really anywhere between 3 and 13 hours-right??

The west coast guys had a heyday on Pintails back then. It was a LONG time ago.
The ducks are still there I'm sure.

Our population has been stable since the 70's.Last January I had a hunt on a frozen after noon with a 20mph north wind. I had 4 hours of no stop sprig floating over me with in 10 yards in groups up to 200. It was one of the coolest experiences I'd ever had duck hunting. Every seasoned California duck hunter has seen group after group of pintail work their set up. This was by far one of the most impressive days I've had. The country might have a pintail problem Cali most certainly does not.

The problem is they/we gotta plow up the duck factory to make the bread basket bigger for humanity. It's a crying shame but Pintails really are in trouble everywhere else. I feel really lucky to know where the Pintails stop in Missouri. A massive 4-section field that's private and not hunted except for a few very lucky folks who lease around there. I have sat on the border of my friend's lease watching wave after wave... seemingly endless as that area fills up with Pins. It happens in late-December and January at some time depending on the weather.
Won't say specifically where, but it is in the Bootheel of Mo.
That area and northeast Arkansas is pretty dog-gone good.

Tom, it sounds like an excellent idea, especially the hog hunting. Unlimited pig shooting is something I've always wanted to do. Between me going to Sconny to pick up a dog, and the No Coast hunt, it ain't happening this year, though. I'll keep that in the books for next year, though.

Thats what I am thinking. I am going to MT with jarbo to get an antelope and anything else we can shoot. Back just in time for opening of KS duck season.

BUT the following year, I have a score to settle with wild hogs, revolver style. One charged me last time and I shot him with a .357 magnum, which was not near enough gun.

I now own a .44mag SuperBlackHawk and I want to hear one squeal and bleed like HnTfsh over a stump. (opps, was that the outside voice?)

Anywho, my neighbor lives half the year down near Brownsville. He is probably too old to go with us but his son in law it totally up for it. Hes a good dude.

For that matter, I know we can shoot hogs CHEAPER anywhere in Oklahoma, no OOS licsense required, no season, no limit....get the picture? My wife loves it when I bring a pig back. I have only shot 2 of them but they both were really good eating.

He is right there are lots of pintails in the central valley of CA.

I'll just put out the snow goose floater spread during the no coast hunt...seems like pintails love to dive bomb a snow goose spread.

Killed my first this last season and he was very close to going on the wall. Definitely cool birds.

The texas and louisiana coast are literally full of pintail, redheads, and teal.

Two years ago Had a flock of at least 50 dropped in on us while picking decoys up after full limits. All we could do was stand there in awe and stare at one massive bull sprig hover over us. Will. Never. Forget.

If you use a guide in south texas, I'd recommend Bay Flats. They're pretty good. As far as Louisiana, I'm planning on bringing the boat to the docks in Venice for part of duck season if you want to come down there and join me, you're more than welcome.

Stop on the way down (panhandle) kill some ducks. Continue south in a couple days, hunt hogs. I know texas is a huge state.
