This just hapened not too far from where I live. A 14 year old autistic boy with the mind of a 5 year old was playing in his yard with his pet dog. Two women drive up and ask if he wants to go for a drive, and he gets in. They offer to buy the dog, a teacup chihuahua puppy for 20$ and again, being handicapped, the boy accepts. After some time, they bring him home a d his mother calls the police. The two women turn themselves in and are not being charged with anything.
WTF? The police say that since he willingly got in the car and sold the dog, no crime was commited. Does this not mean that people can just go around abducting children legally as long as they willingly get in the car? Does it also not mean its not child molesting if the child trusts his/her abuser and goes along with it? I just can't wrap my head around it. This legal system is fucked.

Yeah but seriously, did they not just abduct a child? I imagine you would be pretty pissed if this hapened in your neck of the woods

Oh I agree. Can the parents not press charges for theft because their child can't legally sell the dog?

I would think that the second you leave with the kid, it's abduction. There is no requirement to "do" anything, simply leaving with them is abduction. It's situations like this which make you realize as a parent just how close to going to prison you are, because I've caught myself having to NOT do something violent when someone just says something a little off-color about one of my kids. Much less if someone ever actually harmed them. I hope to never, ever find out, but I don't see how people do not just flip the eff out when something happens to their kids, laws and the system be damned.

True dat. I dug thru a dumpster full of other people's nasty fucking trash. Got a piece of paper with the guy's name on it. Called the 5-0 (lady) and she took care of it.
In actuality she called the guy at work. He said he didn't put ALL the trash there so she made him remove the one bag I could prove was his. End of problem. No citation was issued and I was supposed to just say, "OK" so I did.
From now on I'm dumping the trash into the street and making sure nobody can prove it. THEN we will have a problem. Wait n see.

After thinking...it seems like there are two crimes in op's post. Three possibly. One. The abduction of a minor. Two. Negligence of the same minor.
Devils advocate says, "who leaves an autistic (retarded) child unsupervised? File this case under M for mind your own business. That is what 5-0 did. (Mounties)

I see your point. They said he has the mind of a five year old, I let my six year old play outside, supervised of course, but I'm also not standing at the window watching the entire time. Then again she knows better than to get into a strangers car.
Perhaps the mother should have been more attentive, but a crime is going unpunished.

Two edged sword. Grab onto one side and you get cut by the other.
