Have two. One in the smoker that monitors the temp inside.
The second is digital, has a cable and probe, and tells the meat's temp. It's so I can tell without opening the smoker.
Got it at walmart. El Cheepo.
Something like this one.

Good deal. I payed 12.95 for mine a long time ago when gas cost half as much.

That thermometer isn't really worth it. The "cool factor" is very high though.
I can tell by feeling my smoker if it's too hot. Trying to control temperature that closely is difficult too. The meat thermometer is GOLD.

On subject of smoking. I urge you all to try smoking brats.
Don't grill them at all. Cook on the smoker-side with no direct heat. (by the chimney)
It takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Don't turn 'em or anything. Just go drink beer for 45 minutes. (seriously)
At the end I slide the brats over towards the firebox for the last 4-5 minutes.
They come off all spittin and mad sounding. Kinda puffed up.

Let them sit on a plate a few minutes and they settle down, shrink, and the casing turns into something that "snaps" when you bite. TRY IT!!!!

You will never cook brats any other way after you do them in a smoker. They are super juicy and have little smoke rings inside too. Cool! I didn't even really like brats that much until I started cooking them on the smoker.
