The story of the World record trout!

So there we were, on the majestic englebright lake in hopes of filling the boat with majestic trout. I shoot Spoonies was a half hour late and got left at home but later met us at the boat launch.

We set out across the lake to my gramps favorite spot and within minutes of anchoring up gadwalls rod doubles over. He sets the hook with the speed and ferocity of 1000 tigers. The fight is on!!! The trout dodges this way and that. Drag singing like a scene from a river runs through it. The giant rainbow tires and gadwall yells boot get the net. I look at him and say, "what net"... "It's a fucking trout"! Next thing I know he's in a life and death battle with the rainbow at the side of the boat! I shoot Spoonies and I are laughing at the intensity of the fight between gadwall and this trophy sized trout.

Then it happens... The splashing stops and gadwalls head slowly rocks back as if he's cursing the gods. He stands with his lip quivering and a single tear running down his cheek and says "fuck". "That thing was huge"!!! "Possibly a North American record rainbow". I look at him and say "are you mad!" He gives me a look and says, "why don't you have a net?" I replied because its fucking trout, who cares!

Gadwall stomps his foot in anger, I shoot Spoonies bust into laughter at his tantrum and I say, "your seriously mad aren't you!" "Kinda" he responds. Still pouting like a small child who just watched his puppy get run over by a garbage truck.

And that's the story of how gadwall lost the world record rainbow caught on orange power bait.

This story is great. Reminds me of the time I couldn't net a buddys walleye that may have been close to a state record.

Fun to catch and they taste good barbecued in foil. It's a filler fish between striper and salmon.;)

You need a razor sharp hook and some balls! It is reely hard to drive the hook through that bony beek of theirs. Fight like crazy, reel em in and kick em back in the water. Unless you want to fry some garballs, which taste nothing like salmon by the way. Cut fish for bait works good or just put a piece of white nylon rope with frayed end over the hook like a lure and they will hit that too! Lot of fun! I usually don't keep anything but Flatheads so I just like to catch fish and tear up tackle.

Soak it overnight in salt water with a dab of vinegar, then drain it, mash it up, add some bread crumbs, onions, garlic and a little red pepper. Roll it into balls and drop in the deep fryer, pretty good. Better than any trout I have eaten anyway.

You ever troll for flathead? I catch most of mine trolling crankbaots for walleye.

Kinda, drift fishing with big live bluegill, crappie, bass or some other shit fish. I prefer to hog them or catch them on jugs while floating around drinking Ice tea or beer all night depending on the bugs and the mood.

Tried exactly that, was horrible. Too strong and nasty for me. A couple of people liked though, one was a coonass and the other a knee grow.

I think I have been cheated on trout. The only ones I had were full of fat and squishy meat like the stuff you cut off and throw away off of a Flathead. I think it was these fish themselves and not the overall trout family. Too many people eat them and say the are great. But people say that about ducks to and I just find them edible nothing special.

Hoop and gill nets is how I get 90% of my cat. Catch em on trot and set lines baited w/ bream too. I go every other hook craw/bream. Rarely do I get em on the craws but they love the shit out of bream.

I usually do lemon pepper and butter or olive oil and Montreal seasoning for trout turns out good. I just hate the bones.
