Last winter I stayed with a rice farmer a couple weeks. He told me about the time one of his neighbors tried growing peanuts instead of rice. Snow geese ate em all and crapped all over everything. He said no more growing peanuts in Egypt, Arkansas. lol

Peanuts used to be the cash crop of Whitesboro (where I live). The ducks and geese used to come in so thick that the local farmers would buy your shells and let you hunt on their land just to get rid of the damn things. Unfortunately that was before my time and peanuts no longer bring in as much cash as they once did.

Out by proctor they used to have the same situation. Father in law still tells stories about how many birds there were. Same as you though, before my time.

My dad told me a story here recently about how a buddy of his learned to call. It was in the days when peanut production was winding down but there were still a few around. Hid friend found a piece of fabric that was the same color as peanut vines and went out and laid down in the field right where the ducks came in. He stayed there listing with hundreds of mallards all around him until he sounded exactly like them. That's what I wish I could see. Not necessarily hunt them but just see and listen to that many mallards all in the same place at once.
He also said that they used to walk with the cows in the adjacent field to get close enough to shoot at them. You couldn't set up on the fence row but if you kept the cows calm and walked with them you could get within feet of all the feeding ducks.

Duck Hammer...I know dozens of places you can sit among thousands of wild mallard ducks.
Wildlife refuges, every one.
C'mon up north a bit or East some and a bit north.

I know there are lots of places where there are lots of ducks but not in the barren duck wasteland of North Texas. I'll be in NW Arkansas for duck season this year so maybe I can find a good spot.

They're probably a strain of va peanuts that are grown down south. Much of the peanut market is now in South America and Mexico.
Cool thing about Suffolk is that Planters is there. Roasted peanuts smell so damn good. I love the fall time up there. Farmers digging peanuts is another really cool smell. Means cool weather is on the way.

Doesn't the Texas panhandle still farm a far share of peanuts. Seems every thing I've ever read or saw on the area, hunters are setting up in dry peanut fields for lessers and specks.

Not sure. All I have seen is corn and cotton but I don't go exploring the panhandle.
