Stupid Question?

When adding sugar to water, after the sugar is dissolved, how much volume does it add? For example, if I have a 5 gallon container, almost full, and I empty the water into a kettle, heat it, and add 20 pounds of sugar, will I have the volume of the 20 pounds of sugar to account for when I put it back in the 5 gallon container? If not, how can I calculate how much space the dissolved sugar will take up?
This is all hypothetical, by the way.

No clue. Try it on a smaller scale with say a qaurt of water and 5cups of sugar. Measure before and after to determine a difference.

x2 on that. Especially since rebs ratio is easily convertible to gallons (4 qt per gallon). Not sure on the cups versus lbs though. Just use 25% of 20lbs in one quart i think. the volume ought to be less than what the dry sugar is cuz of all the interstitial space. wait a seond...can 20lbs even fully dissolve in 5 gallons...seems like a ton.

I do believe that the temp of the liquid will also determine how much sugar will stay dissolved especially if your at the maximum capacity the water can hold in dissolution. So when it cools the volume ought to increase cuz the sugar crystals create more space than in solution.
edit: or is that less space once its come out of solution. Hmmm I think water is the only solid that has less density in solid form. Been a long time. Try googling it on hummingbird.com

Hypotheticaly, I place the sugar in the container and add water to bring it to the total volume. Sugar has a lot of air between the grains so it's hard to say how much water it will displace. It will disolve, but that is a lot of sugar.

So do you have lots of hummingbirds or are they just really big?

He has a hybrid hummingbird-emu. Only one, but it is big and fast. Gotta keep it's energy up.
What did you think he was doing with all that water and sugar?

Only one other thing I can think of, but I would split all that sugar into two batches, allegedly.
But obviously hes just feeding the hummingbird/emu hybrid, sounds like an expensive animal to feed. I wonder if it has the volume of meat of an emu and the succulence of a hummingbird, or the other way around.

Weigh a full pal of fresh water and give it to the horses. Then weigh a full pal of horse piss and you'll have your answer.

For the record, it adds about 1/3 the volume of the sugar when dissolved.

Looking forward to it this season...hypothetically.

Nope. "Off" and "wide open" are my only two speeds. No sense half assing anything. You do it balls out, one of two things happens: you get it done in half the time, or you learn a lesson so you can get it done in half the time next time.
Life's too short for pussyfooting.

Exactly. And what do they look for? People being overly cautious, and obeying every traffic law. Guy coming to a complete stop and looking both ways twice, with the blinker on in a neighborhood? Dead giveaway, right there.

Not that I do much drinking behind the wheel, but it makes sense. Next time I have five or six beers fishing I'll remember to throw the throttle into "wide open" to get home.

A loud and hearty prolonged Rebel Yell when doing the hole shot will help convey the image that you are perfectly sober, and simply enjoying an afternoon on the water, also.
