To bitch about this. Got a letter in the mail from DNR today, since I am now on the "approved, official" list of nuisance wildlife operators to call.
The Town of Ocean City was working with DNR to have some of us on "speed dial" (there's only about 6 of us down here, anyway, on the eastern shore). Why, you ask? Because they are apparently having a huge outbreak of rabid raccoons and feral cats. The cops have been the ones stuck doing these calls, and they were looking for another solution. So they got with DNR, and we were suggested. They did, however, state that we would have to purchase an Ocean City exterminator license for $185, and maintain all paperwork and insurance as specified.
How about, fuck you. Keep sending very busy cops out to deal with your rabid raccoons terrorizing the tourists. Nowhere else do I have to do such a thing. Although there is a side of me which may do it, anyway, and tell them it's $600 per animal. Since I have to maintain a license, insurance, and log books. And I can't kill it- have to live trap it, then take them off the island. So I would have to tote around rabid critters for about 10 miles, in tourist town traffic, to get to some woods where I would be anonymous enough to get it out of the Jeep, shoot it, and bury it. Maybe I'll tell them $750 per animal, and if they don't like it they can go piss up a rope.

Hell, for $750/per I'd dress up in tights and dance through the streets playing a magical tune on a flute.

Write them a letter that says you were killed by a rabid racoon.

Same here. I doubt they'll get any takers at that price. I talked to two of the other guys already, and they agreed to $600, but I couldn't get them up to $750. So looks like if I want it, $600 it is, unless some of the other dumbasses low ball. In which case, they're welcome to it.

When I was a boy there was a rabid dog running loose in town. It was a big deal and here is what they did.
First there were psa's on the radio telling everyone to stay inside today due to a rabid dog on the loose. Then five-0 went out and hunted the beast down and shot it.
Catching and releasing a rabid animal is not a crime in the commonwealth? It should be. Its the dumbest idea I ever heard. Think about the consequences.

NEWS FLASH......This morning, in a rural area of Maryland, a man was found intentionally releasing rabid animals into public forested areas. When asked what motivated his activity, he answered the government requested it. The man has been taken to the state mental hospital for further examination and questioning. It is unknown, at this time, if the man is mentally stable enough to withstand trial.......we now return you to your local programming.

You missed the part where I said "get to some woods, shoot it, then bury it". You just can't shoot it in town, which I get, but they need to understand that this will jack the cost up. I don't, but a lot of these guys have .22 bang sticks for just this reason (a LOT of nuisance trapping is done within city limits), but Ocean City, in addition to charging for an exterminators license, has told DNR that even bang sticks are not to be used.

Putting that rebar to use?

As soon as a tourist gets bit by a rabid animal, my price goes up to $1,000 per animal, because the tourism board will be creaking the eff out.
And should they ever agree to that, you guys won't hear from me for a while, because I'm gonna have about 100 live traps all over, taking "loaded" traps into town to get my grand, then driving around with the critters in my Jeep for an hour or so before taking them back in to collect again.

Shit. For $500/per I'd trap them in MI and keep you supplied with fresh catches!

I'm not bashing a rabid coon or cat with that thing. I've gotten blood/brains splattered on me a little here and there, but no way am I risking that. A bullet for them.
I wonder if a high voltage cattle prod would kill a coon? Always wanted one of those.

Your comment made me think of the scene in Funny Farm where Chevy chase is trying to knock the guy out to get a hook out.

it's not the voltage that kills, it's the amps. get an old welder and hook it up to a horse trough and fill it with water. throw in rabid coon and watch him dance

I've tried to get this image out of my head for quite sometime now. I would imagine if you did this, that you could not keep the ladies (or men if you did this in California) off of you.
