Flooding corn

Postby KC KONG » Sun Jul 21, 2013 12:12 pm

I have been interested in flooding a property of ours for a few years but I am not really sure how to go about it and if it will be worth it in the end. It is 50 aercs with 10-15 of that being timber. About 3/4 of it would need to be levied up and proper drainage. We kill a few ducks off the pond on the property next to it every year. The location ( southeast of kansas city) is what worries me with it being such a small amout of flooded corn probable 30 aerce and maybe 5-10 aerce of flooded timber if it was done right. WIll that be enough to pull ducks and hold them with no other people in the county that floods crops?

If that the only thing the ducks have it seems like they would be pouring in there. Would it hold them, as long as therres food and safety, yes, but overhunting it, youll push them all out. a few hunts a week seems like it would be maxing it out, unless you have a lot of fresh flight birds coming through. my .02

It should be enough to pull ducks. You'd most likely have to hunt it sparingly to keep from scaring them off for good though.

Dont flood until just before the ducks arrive. Hard to predict...
The corn will germinate and fall off a couple weeks after flooding depending on conditions. Puddle duck love to dive after the germinated kernels.

Don't know how the crops go out there, but on the WMAs here try and plant so the corn turns brown about 2 weeks before season, then they start the flooding shortly after. Usually flood anywhere from 6" of water to cob high on the corn. And like said above, don't over hunt it.

Having actually hunted over flooded corn since the seventies qualifies me to comment on the subject. They flood the corn here at the end of October and it germinates around duck-o-clock. Right on scedule. Our season starts very soon after the corn gets flooded.
About two to three weeks later, the mallards come through in a good year.

I have walked into these fields when other hunters insisted the corn was gone. I stood in knee deep water looking at empty cobs. Then after I stood still...looked down and it was gold everywhere. No corn my ass. Set up and killed ducks. lol
The corn germinated and popped off the cobs by itself.

Anyone know the regulations in Missouri for maybe harvesting strips of the corn? or pumping out of a creek/river? Can you broadcast smart weed or millet or does it have to be drilled?

Betty, the term germination is for when the plant sprouts. That is usually 7-10 days after planting. The corn popping off the cob is not germination. Hope this clears up your thoughts.

The best time to flood is right before the ducks you want to shoot arrive. Otherwise the Coots and lesser wanted species will hurt your food supply.

Who do you know that sells smart weed? I can use some of that at my place. I can't find a supplier.

For years the state maintained and then flooded corn crops at many of the public venues I hunted. In bad years we wouod get either nothing or tons of weeds. Looking back...the weedy years were the best. Seeds floating everywhere. Rough on hunters and gear but damn...the ducks.
The year your bags get covered in them damned two-prong burs are usually kick-ass.
They call it moist soil management now. It means they basically gave up on planting row crops.
Much of the public hunting for waterfowl is very poor for farming due to marginal flooding.
We deal with it. Scout. Find birds or not.

Maybe its "winter corn" that germinates in October.

Some outdoor can be good shit, depends on care and maintenance. The best is indoor hydroponic.
