Boat Tales

Postby MuddyWaterWarlock » Mon Jul 22, 2013 3:42 am

We were pulling into the boat ramp yesterday. Another boat was getting ready to load onto a trailer. The feller lined up and put it right on the trailer. The other feller in the truck started to pull out of the water. The boat started to slide off the trailer. The boat was about half on and half on riding on the skeg of the lower unit. We had reached the ramp and decided just to watch. The feller in the boat started hollering and of course feller number two had the window up. Feller number 1 finally got feller number 2s attention and stopped. Feller number 2 tries to winch the boat the rest of the way on. Either the winch or feller number 2 didn't have the balls to get the boat pulled on. So feller 2 says "lets push it on with the motor" (Boat is in parking lot). Feller 1 fires up the motor! Yes, really! After pissing myself and clearing the tears out of my eyes I look up to see feller 2 pushing on the boat while feller 1 is revving the motor, in gear, in the parking lot! They decide this isn't working and decide to put the boat back in the water and try again. Brilliant! They drive back around to the ramp and start to back up, remember the skeg is dragging the ground. I thought they were going to tear the motor off the boat! I finally couldn't take it anymore and hollered for them to raise the motor, the winch was holding it on now. So they raised the motor, backed in, winched the boat on the rest of the way and drove off into the sunset. If it was any of you fellers, thanks for the entertainment

I wondered why the boat would not go forward. You mean the prop has to be in the water all the time?

Wait you're saying these guys tried to use a outboard that was out of the water to move the boat further up the trailer?

Ya, and the worst part is I don't believe they were drinking. I think these guys were just........out there. I can't count the number of times I have seen boats come off trailers while being backed down ramps(before they hit the water).

Wow what fucking tards. When it comes to me at the dock I try and be as quick and possible to limit the time I tie up the ramp. I've gotten pretty good and launching and retrieving my 16ft boat on my own.

Saw basically the same thing happen last month. A hispanic gentleman unhooked his winch line AND safety chain before backing down the ramp. Did I mention he had roller bunks?
The boat took off sliding down the trailer.. He was almost at waters edge when the skeg hit the pavement. Everyone was there hollering at him to stop. His wife was standing on the finger dock holding the bowline, just watching. She seemed really surprised when the boat didnt make it all the way to the water. :o
Funny thing, They were launching just as everyone was trying to get off of the water because of a major thunderstorm bearing down on us. I expect they got drenched

Seems every time I go to the ramp the amount of clowns at the amazes me. I always seem to come away laughing or cussing or a combination of both.

Over the 4th we went to beach and I took my boat to do a little saltwater fishing. Came up on some guys in skiff and one was about to jump in the water with a life jacket. Upon closer examination I realized they had run over a crab pot and hung the rope in their prop. I idled over and offered to help them untangle it. As looked at the foot I noticed that it had muffs on it. I told them that their muffs were still on the motor and there was no way it get enough water to keep it cool. They response was, "o shit, maybe that's why our motor keeps overheating." :fingerhead:

It's a skill for sure. I back my trailer down to where the tires on the trailer just enter the water. I get out and put my anchor on the side of the ramp and back the boat in fast enough the momentum floats it away from the trailer. Pull the trailer out of the water jump out and use the anchor rope to pull the boat on to the ramp leaving you anchor on the side of the ramp. Park and run back to your boat. Takes 2 minutes tops.

Little trick I came up with was to tie you a what I call my "helper" rope to the trailer and the boat.

I have an 8ft length of rope that is tied to the front of my trailer (right about where the bow ends up) and then has a clip that clips onto the bow. When I am getting ready to launch my boat I unhook everything except the "helper" rope and then back the trailer into the water and hit the brakes hard enough to take the boat off the tailer. The boat leaves the trailer but is held into place with the "helper". I get out of the truck, un hook the "helper" and use a 2nd length of rope to guide the boat over to the dock and secure it there. Run back to the truck and pull the trailer out.

2 or 3 minutes flat. Usually takes longer to remove the stern trailer straps and bow winch strap then to launch the boat.

Not necessarily when high, but there have been times after driving a stick shift for a while, that when getting back in an automatic, I will lift up both feet, one to go for the clutch, and one to go for the brake as I would in a manual, only to stomp both feet down on the oversize brake pedal in an automatic.

It has made for some rather "dramatic" stops at red lights. I usually just keep puffing on my cigarette, looking straight ahead as if nothing happened. Completely disregarding the 6 feet of rubber skid marks and my slightly sideways vehicle sitting there at the light. Never mind all the ancient trash and shit which finds it's way immediately into the front floorboards.

Years ago, We were waiting in line to launch at a single lane mud hole ramp. The truck in front of us had backed in and I was standing there waiting for our boat to come in so I could guide it down in the dark. The feller trying to launch jumped out and gave the boat a shove and it went back and came right back to the boat. He shoved it off and it came right back, over and over and over. Finally, I said "Yo dumbass" I said yo because that was cool then. I said "Yo dumbass, take off the tarp strap on the back!" Sometimes I feel like a superfreakinggenious being able to solve lifes difficult situations.

on a simliliar note, i was sittin at a red light next to a yellow jeep, was chattin with my friend in the passenger seat, and in the corner of my eye I saw green, which was the turn arrow, not the green for me. I hit the gas and immediately saw the red light so i braked again. Apparently the jeep wasnt paying attention either as he gunned it and then realized that i was still stopped. By now hes a good car and a half length in front of me and almost in the middle of the interestion. Just then the light turned for us, i shot passed him only to give him a look, his gf was laughing so hard at him he never turned his head. Nothing like jumping the gun!

Clinton Lake...Dockside Marina boat ramp. (Illinois)
That sucker has 6 lanes of fuck-ups going on all summer long. It's entertaining as hell because you get to see it all.
The diversity of watercraft getting loaded and unloaded is amazing. When trouble starts it tends to have a domino effect and the whole ramp turns into chaos. I almost never launch there but use one of the less crowded ramps like Parnell.
I've heard that it's incredibly stupid to fuck around with a crazy man's head.

haha thats great!
I have one that i didn't witness first hand, but a buddy did. So this buddy was cruising down the river when he noticed a boat with a couple Hmong's in it, and they were plowing a ton of water. He pulls up to them to see if everything is alright and notices that boat is riding very low for the amount of weight they have in it. Well after a quick glance he notices that the trailer is still attached to the boat! Apparently they thought that they simply had to take the trailer off of the truck!
