heard this on the radio the other day and it got me thinking about my grandaddy's gun that was past to me last Christmas. its a model 12 in 16ga with plenty of beauty marks and stories to tell. so what is your "grandaddy" gun??



BTW, i got chill bumps when i heard this song. i am really starting to like this guy.

My pappy just died end of January and I got his old Belgian A5.

grandpa gave up guns after the war, died when i was very young, so i never knew him.

And I still pheasant hunt with it every year on opening day.

Hasn't been passed to me, but my Grandpa still shoots his Model 12 16 gauge, it has earned the nickname "killer" in our family, he has killed a pheasant every year with it since he got it in 7th grade, now 77 years old. I make it a point every year to make sure that him and I go out and get a pheasant with it. This year I picked up a Remington 11-48 16 gauge in a trade, so from here on out it will be a 16 gauge only hunt.

You guys have been blessed. My grandfather with guns (other was Quaker) had a 12ga Fox SxS, lever action Savage .300 and octagon barreled lever action Marlin .22, but all went other directions when he passed. Was a period when I scoured the bushes for the right Model 12 16ga to be my own "proper" hand-me-down and very nearly pulled that trigger two or three times, but eventually decided to just leave the grandkids my beat up work guns, so they've nothing to fight over.

(Also thought it would be cool to leave a legacy of handcrafted custom calls and tried to learn to like several enough to make them "Papaw's calls," but it just didn't happen. Passed them all on to collectors in favor of the common calls I've come to trust.)

Couple years ago I turned into The Grandfather. My grandson Logan will be getting a lot of shotguns. If he is smart he will cherish the model 1897 Winchester, the 1148 Remington, and especially my Beretta Silver Mallard.

Papa's favorite is a Ithaca 16 ga he bought with money form his paper route in 1954.

just snapped a couple photos with my NOT SMART phone i will post a pic later tonight.im trying to find the oldest date on it right now 1900 is the newest date on it. think i will run serial number to find date of manufacturing

The year of manufacture for serial number 164XXX is 1903. grandpa was born in 1908 and this gun was his uncle's

You seem to know a lot about the gun I have.
My number is 625 xxx with a letter E above the number.
Barrel and receiver are numbered. The newest number I got is July 5, 1910. Its on the barrel. Lots of dates. I think they are patent dates?
Mine was manufactured in 1911 or 1912.
Up until today I thought it was from post ww2, not pre ww1. Wow.
What gauge is yours?

I had two grandfathers that hunted. My dad's father is where the Winchester came from. Watertown, South Dakota.
My other grandpa used a Long Tom that is mine but sadly ...has yet to find me.

betty i dont need to look up JMB, i doubt there is anyone on here that dont know him.
mine isnt a trench model mine pre dates ww1
