Making a trip to North Dakota

Hello,

I apologize in advance for the basic questions. I have read about the great duck hunting in North Dakota and am interested in making a trip out to visit this year. I would make my trip Oct 10-14.

Should I expect good duck/goose hunting this time of year? Worthy of a cross country trip (I live in New York).

Also, would you mind suggesting any guides in the area? Thanks.

Don't know any guides but that should be a good time to head up there.

I live up here. Thats going to be a good week. Crops are a month behind up here in northern nd. I would suggest the SE corner this year. They faired much better on getting the crops in than we did. Guides are not needed here. It can be free lanced with a little hard work.

Not even really that hard of work, just general knowledge about waterfowl and their habits and a little bit of gas. One thing to keep in mind is that time of year you will still likely be shooting a lot of brown ducks, so I would recommend brushing up on your duck ID on the wing, otherwise it can be a gamble every time you pull the trigger (setting up with a crossing shot and the sun at your back can help drastically). If you are looking for any goose hunting, I would recommend a later date, as most of the residents have been thoroughly educated (early seasons starting in less than 2 weeks) and the migrators won't be down for another couple weeks (snows first, Canadas later).

If he's from NY, I think he should be used to brownish ducks. By October they have really started to change into their winter plumage so shouldn't be too hard to distinguish, but don't expect anything special for a sprig tail.

While I agree that freelancing is not a difficult task in NoDak, he asked about guides. Not sure about the OP's gear or ability to transport it.

I've not hunted with these guys, but I've fished with them a couple time and know they know their stuff...
